Maryland Baseball Falls to WVU

It was a rough night for the Maryland Terrapin’s baseball team in Morgantown, as they fell to West Virginia 14-2. The loss puts Maryland at 24-15 on the year.

It was not the best night for Tayler Stiles. The freshman southpaw from Bowie gave up 7 runs in just 4 innings. This was only the second start for Stiles, but the Terps will need all of their pitchers to throw well if they want to make a run in the ACC Tournament and possibly in the NCAA Tournament.

Offensively, Maryland had seven hits, led by shortstop Blake Schmit, who had two. However, Maryland left eleven men on base. Some credit must be given to West Virginia pitching, but that will hurt any team on any night.

Catcher Kevin Martir hit his first home run of the season.

The good news: Maryland still sits in ninth place in the ACC. West Virginia is a non-conference game, so it doesn’t affect their conference record. The top ten teams make the ACC Tournament. Maryland has series against Boston College, Pitt, and Notre Dame to end ACC play, and all three of those teams sit below Maryland in the standings.

The bad news: Maryland is a bubble team to make the NCAA Tournament. They need every game they can get.

Maryland plays George Mason at home today before heading to Boston College for a weekend series.
