Johns Hopkins University Athletics Women’s Soccer fell to Swarthmore, 1-0, on Celia Kanellakos’ goal with just under 12 minutes remaining Saturday in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. The Centennial Conference opener was the first loss of the season for 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins.
The match remained scoreless for just over 78 minutes before Swarthmore broke through. Amiah Evans played a long ball into the middle of the field, and Kanellakos collected it near the top of the box before scoring past Johns Hopkins goalkeeper Ella Kruntchev.
Swarthmore Scores Late
Kanellakos scored her second goal of the season, according to the scoring summary, which credited Aminah Evans with the assist. The victory moved Swarthmore to 4-1-1 overall and 1-0 in the Centennial Conference.
Johns Hopkins pressed for an equalizer after the goal, but Swarthmore goalkeeper Sofie Aird preserved the shutout with 11 saves. Aird made five of those saves during the final nine minutes.
Johns Hopkins Pushes for Equalizer
Caroline Marcus had a point-blank shot stopped with just under three minutes remaining. Terren Davis also had a free kick from the edge of the box stopped with less than a minute to play.
Johns Hopkins held a 15-8 advantage in shots and had the only corner kick of the match. Kruntchev made three saves as the Blue Jays fell to 4-1-2 overall and 0-1 in the Centennial Conference.

Johns Hopkins is scheduled to host McDaniel at Homewood Field on Wednesday, September 23, at 4 p.m. The game will be another Centennial Conference contest.
