Jamir Watkins Undergoes Successful ACL Surgery, Wizards Lose Key Young Defensive Piece
The Washington Wizards received difficult news Thursday as forward Jamir Watkins underwent successful reconstructive surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee, an injury suffered during the 2026 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. The procedure was performed by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Riley Williams at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, according to the team.
While the surgery was successful, the injury is expected to sideline Watkins for the majority, and potentially all, of the 2026-27 NBA season.
Tough Blow for Washington’s Development
The timing could not be worse for the Wizards.
Washington entered the offseason with one of the NBA’s youngest rosters after adding No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa, while continuing to develop players such as Alex Sarr, Bilal Coulibaly, Bub Carrington, Tre Johnson, Will Riley, and Watkins. Watkins had recently re-signed with the organization on a two-way contract after showing enough promise during his rookie season to remain part of the team’s long-term plans.
Although he was not a featured scorer, Watkins quickly earned a reputation as one of Washington’s hardest-working defenders.
Injury Happened During Summer League
Watkins suffered the injury during Washington’s Summer League opener against the Utah Jazz on July 9.
In a defensive possession while guarding highly touted rookie Darryn Peterson, Watkins appeared to slip before grabbing his left knee. Despite the injury, he remarkably returned to the game and logged nearly 20 minutes before further evaluation later revealed the torn ACL.
The Wizards initially listed him with a knee injury before confirming the severity following additional testing.
Productive Rookie Campaign
The 25-year-old forward appeared in 50 NBA games during his rookie season, averaging:
- 7.4 points
- 3.9 rebounds
- 1.3 assists
- 1.1 steals
- 20.6 minutes per game
Watkins was originally selected with the 43rd overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft after a standout collegiate career at Florida State. His defensive versatility, physicality, and relentless effort made him a favorite among coaches and fans despite still developing offensively.
During Summer League, he again stood out by defending the opponent’s top perimeter players and bringing energy every night.
What It Means for the Wizards
Washington’s rebuild remains centered around developing young talent, and Watkins had positioned himself to compete for rotation minutes while splitting time between the Wizards and the Capital City Go-Go.
With his absence, the organization will likely rely more heavily on its young wing depth, including Bilal Coulibaly, Will Riley, AJ Dybantsa, Tre Johnson, and other developing players to absorb defensive responsibilities.
Fortunately, modern ACL reconstruction has dramatically improved recovery outcomes. Many NBA players have successfully returned from similar injuries, although rehabilitation typically requires nine to twelve months before a full basketball return.

This is an unfortunate setback for one of Washington’s most intriguing young role players.
Watkins may never have been projected as the franchise’s leading scorer, but every rebuilding team needs players willing to defend, rebound, and do the little things that help winning basketball. He was beginning to carve out exactly that role.
For Maryland basketball fans, this is disappointing because the Wizards have assembled one of the league’s most exciting collections of young talent. Watkins was expected to be part of that movement before his development was interrupted.
The good news is that ACL recoveries are more successful than ever, and Watkins has already demonstrated the work ethic necessary to earn his place in the NBA. If his rehabilitation goes well, there is every reason to believe he can return and continue building his career in Washington.
