How Sweep It Is! Maryland Baseball Defeats Notre Dame

Maryland Baseball pulled off a huge sweep this weekend in their final ACC home games. Maryland’s pitching staff shut down Notre Dame as the Terps won three huge games.

On Friday night, Jake Stinnett twirled a complete game shutout in the final home start of his career. Stinnett struck out 13 Notre Dame hitters. This was Stinnett’s fourth complete game of the year, and his second in ACC play. Maryland’s offense was quiet again, but Jose Cuas’s 2-RBI single was all Stinnett needed.

On Saturday afternoon, everything was clicking for the Terps. The offense was led by Brandon Lowe, who was 3-3, and Tim Lewis, who had 3 RBIs. Speedster Charlie White and shortstop Blake Schmidt also chipped in with two hits each. Freshman Mike Shawaryn picked up his eighth victory of the season, which ties the Maryland record. Shawaryn was solid over 6.2 innings, only giving up a 2-run home run to Notre Dame’s left fielder Ryan Bull. Senior Ben Brewster (Park School) picked up his second save of the year, pitching 2.1 perfect innings, as the Terps won 6-2.

Today, the Terps gave the ball to Jake Drossner, and he turned in a solid outing despite not getting a decision. Drossner pitched five innings, gave up two runs, and struck out seven Irish hitters. Bobby Ruse (C Milton Wright) pitched two scoreless innings and got the win. Kevin Mooney (North Harford) pitched 1.2 scoreless to pick up the save. On the offensive side of things, LaMonte Wade (St. Paul’s) had an RBI double, and Anthony Papio hit the go-ahead homer to give the Terps a 3-2 lead. They went on to win by that score.

Maryland travels to Richmond to take on VCU on Tuesday, and then they travel to Aberdeen, where they will play Towson under the lights on Wednesday night. After that, it’s off to Pittsburgh.
