The Harford Community College women’s soccer team defeated Sussex County Community College, 4-2, on Aug. 29 at Harford Stadium in Bel Air, Md. Hailey Cain scored twice in a 50-second span during the first half, while Lila Vincenti added a goal and an assist.
Harford Community College women’s soccer team takes control
Harford Community College outshot Sussex County Community College, 12-5, in the opening half and put seven shots on goal. Cain opened the scoring at 36:58 before striking again at 37:48 to give the Fighting Owls a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Cain’s second goal came as she pressured the Sussex County goalkeeper during a clearance. “On the second goal, I came in hot on the Sussex goalkeeper as she was trying to clear ball,” Cain said. “And I got enough of my foot on the ball to deflect it into the back of the net.”
Harford Community College extended its lead at 49:14 when Vincenti scored off an assist from Emma Paff. Vincenti finished with three shots, including one on goal.
Sussex County Community College answers twice
Sussex County Community College got on the scoreboard in the 57th minute when substitute Lottie Cheverton scored off an assist from Kendra Deckert. Cheverton scored both of the Skylanders’ goals in the match.
Annabelle Lathroum restored Harford Community College’s three-goal advantage at 73:11, with Victoria Mendez providing the assist. Lathroum finished with five shots, four of which were on goal.
Cheverton scored again at 80:21 to bring Sussex County Community College within two goals. The Fighting Owls kept the Skylanders off the scoreboard for the remainder of the match.
Harford Community College controls the statistics
Harford Community College finished with a 26-13 advantage in total shots and a 14-10 edge in shots on goal. Sussex County Community College held an 11-5 advantage in corner kicks, while Harford committed seven fouls compared with 13 for the Skylanders.
Cain led Harford Community College with six shots and three shots on goal. Lathroum added one goal, while Vincenti recorded one goal and one assist; Mendez and Paff each contributed an assist.
Olivia Wollschlager started in goal and made two saves during the first half. Alyssa Dunnigan played the second half and made five saves.
Harford Community College remains undefeated
Harford Community College followed the victory over Sussex County Community College with a 1-0 win at Montgomery College on Sept. 1. Vincenti scored the only goal at 36:50, with Sydney McLaughlin recording the assist, and Wollschlager made two saves over 90 minutes to record the shutout.
The victory over Montgomery College improved Harford Community College to 3-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play. Vincenti led the Fighting Owls with four shots and three shots on goal in that match.
