Frostburg State University women’s field hockey defeated No. 7 Indiana (Pa.) 4-3 in a penalty shootout Sept. 26 in Indiana, Pa., after the teams finished tied 3-3 through regulation and two overtime periods. The victory improved Frostburg State to 4-4 and handed Indiana (Pa.) its first loss of the season.
Frostburg State takes control early
Frostburg State built a 3-0 halftime lead behind goals from Sabrina Maldonado, Makenna Buffington and Brooke Saul. The Bobcats recorded seven shots on goal, while Indiana (Pa.) finished with 16.
Goalkeeper Jenna Yazzetti made multiple saves during regulation to protect the lead. Indiana (Pa.) responded with three second-half goals from Kasey Reiger, Grace McGeehan and Hayven Mumma, forcing a 3-3 tie and sending the game to overtime.
Yazzetti secures the shootout win
Neither team scored during the two overtime periods. Yazzetti made additional saves for Frostburg State, while Indiana (Pa.) goalkeeper Celeste Pagliaroli stopped a breakaway chance from Ava Shorkey.
Morgan Sparks scored Frostburg State’s first shootout goal, followed by a goal from Izzy Gibbons. Mikyla Rineer also converted a deadball stroke after Pagliaroli took her down during the shootout.
With Indiana (Pa.) needing a goal to continue the shootout, Yazzetti stopped the final attempt to secure the 4-3 victory. The win gave Frostburg State a road victory over the No. 7 Crimson Hawks.
Frostburg State prepares for PSAC opener
Frostburg State is scheduled to host Bloomsburg on Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. The game marks the start of PSAC play for the Bobcats.
