Fredericksburg Nationals Juan Cruz Hits Two Home Runs in 5-0 Win Over Kannapolis Cannon Ballers

The Fredericksburg Nationals defeated the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 5-0 on Aug. 19, 2026, in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Juan Cruz hit two home runs, and the Fredericksburg pitching staff recorded its ninth shutout of the season as the Nationals evened the series at one game apiece.

Fredericksburg Nationals Pitching Staff Delivers Shutout

Gus Hughes made his first start of the season and pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, including two perfect innings to open the game. Merritt Beeker closed the third inning after Hughes exited.

Xander Meckley pitched the middle three innings, allowing one hit and no runs. Kaleb Kantola made his professional debut in the seventh inning, throwing a scoreless frame with two strikeouts.

Kantola became the first member of the 2026 draft class or undrafted free-agent class to debut on the mound. Cesar Rojas made his 30th appearance of the season with a scoreless eighth inning, and Adam Boucher pitched the ninth.

Juan Cruz Hits Two Home Runs

Manny Cabrera opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run, his fifth of the season. Juan Cruz followed with a leadoff home run in the fourth inning, giving him 10 home runs for the season.

Gavin Fien added an RBI single in the fifth inning to score Dashyll Tejeda. Cruz hit another home run in the eighth inning, producing the first multi-home-run game of his career and helping the Fredericksburg Nationals complete the 5-0 victory.

Fredericksburg hit three home runs in the game, with Cruz accounting for two and Cabrera supplying the other.

Series Even at One Game Apiece

The victory evened the series at one game apiece after the Fredericksburg Nationals lost the opener. The teams were scheduled to meet again the following day at Virginia Credit Union Stadium.

Juan Reyes was scheduled to start for Fredericksburg against Kannapolis right-handed pitcher Gabe Tanner. First pitch was scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Kantola’s professional debut added another notable detail to the series-evening victory. His two strikeouts in the seventh inning contributed to the Nationals’ ninth shutout of the season.
