Fredericksburg Nationals Fall 17-4 to Kannapolis Cannon Ballers Despite Coy James Home Run

The Fredericksburg Nationals lost 17-4 to the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers in the series finale on Aug. 23, 2026, after Kannapolis erased an early deficit and pulled away late. Coy James gave Fredericksburg the lead with a 456-foot home run on the first pitch of the bottom of the first inning.

Coy James Gives Fredericksburg Early Lead

James hit his 19th home run of the season to put the Fredericksburg Nationals ahead. The homer left him one home run short of the FredNats career home run record.

The Kannapolis Cannon Ballers responded in the second inning when Christian Gonzales hit an RBI double to tie the game. Kannapolis then scored three runs in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead.

Gavin Fien, Dashyll Tejeda Spark Rally

Gavin Fien cut the deficit to 4-2 with his 10th home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning. Fien became the sixth FredNats player to reach double-digit home runs, marking the first time in the franchise’s 48-year history that six players had reached at least 10 home runs in a season.

Fredericksburg mounted another threat in the seventh inning. Hunter Hines and Kevin Made opened the inning with back-to-back singles, and Dashyll Tejeda later singled Hines home to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Kannapolis Pulls Away Late

Cesar Rojas pitched in the eighth inning but struggled, ending Fredericksburg’s comeback opportunity. The loss left the FredNats five games below .500 in the second half.

Looking Ahead

Fredericksburg is scheduled to begin a series against the Delmarva Shorebirds next week. The series opener at Perdue Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, and Fredericksburg is 15-3 against Delmarva this season.
