Does Ortiz think he is bigger than the game?

Ortizpoint.jpgThe Boston Red Sox are in last place in the American League East,  nothing really to show boat about.  While doing my normal stat search and sports research I came across this article.  The article is about the recent Tampa Bay Rays and Red Sox series.  Apparently, David Ortiz did yet another bat flip to show up the Rays after hitting a home run.

Rays pitcher Chris Archer pretty much hits the nail on the coffin with his comments.  Saying that off the field Ortiz is great but on the field he does things to make himself look bigger than the game.  Every baseball fan has seen Ortiz show lack of character.  Things like complaining about every inside pitch to, tossing his bat and admiring his home runs rub players and fans the wrong way.

Here is the video with all of Archer’s comments, I agree with everything he says.

Ortiz has had his run ins with the Orioles.   Ortiz has bashed in a phone in Camden Yards and got away with it solely because of who he is.

The worst Ortiz moment came in 2011 when Ortiz charged the mound at Kevin Gregg for throwing an inside pitch.  Gregg did not come close to hitting him and early in the game Ortiz show boated against Zach Britton who was a rookie at that time.

If Ortiz played for any other team his antics would not fly.  Let’s face it he has received less discipline from the league because of the team he plays on.

Show boating shows a huge lack of sportsmanship on Ortiz’s part.  Archer and the Rays are in the right in calling out Ortiz because it is time someone did. It is one thing to celebrate a walk-off home run or a touchdown but not every home run as Ortiz does.  Did you see Chris Davis admire his work when he hit the game winning home run against the Seattle Mariners… no.

Do I think Ortiz thinks he is bigger than the game of baseball?  Yes I do, he has a huge ego and it has caused conflicts with more than one player.  When you are on a last place team and still showboating you are going a little far.
