Coppin State Tees Off a New Era: Eagles Announce Inaugural Men’s Golf Schedule

The newest program at Coppin State University is officially ready to hit the links.

Coppin State Athletics announced the inaugural schedule for its new men’s golf program on Friday, marking another significant milestone for the Eagles as they continue to expand their athletic offerings. The 2026-27 campaign will feature a competitive slate of tournaments throughout the fall and spring seasons, giving the program its first opportunity to establish itself on the collegiate golf landscape.

The addition of men’s golf is another major investment by Coppin State in broadening opportunities for student-athletes. While the Eagles have long competed in sports such as basketball, baseball, cross country, tennis, and track & field, golf now joins the department’s growing list of varsity programs.

Building a Program from the Ground Up

Launching a collegiate golf program is no small task. Unlike established teams with years of recruiting pipelines and tournament experience, Coppin State begins with a clean slate.

The inaugural season will focus on:

  • Establishing the program’s identity.
  • Giving student-athletes valuable collegiate tournament experience.
  • Building a recruiting foundation for future seasons.
  • Competing against experienced Division I programs.
  • Preparing for long-term success within HBCU and Division I golf.

Every tournament this season represents a “first” in program history—from the opening tee shot to the first team score, top-10 finish, and eventually the first tournament championship.

A Challenging Schedule

Coppin State’s first schedule features multiple tournaments across the fall and spring, providing the Eagles with opportunities to compete against strong regional and national competition. The schedule was designed to expose the young program to a variety of courses and competitive environments while allowing the coaching staff to evaluate and develop the roster throughout the year.

For a first-year program, experience will be every bit as valuable as results.

What Success Looks Like

Wins may not immediately define the Eagles’ first season.

Instead, success can be measured by:

  • Lowering team scores throughout the year.
  • Developing consistency.
  • Recruiting future talent.
  • Building a competitive culture.
  • Establishing Coppin State as a destination for collegiate golfers.

Programs rarely become contenders overnight, but every established golf team began with an inaugural season similar to the one Coppin State is about to begin.

Impact on Coppin Athletics

Adding men’s golf continues the university’s commitment to expanding opportunities for student-athletes while increasing the visibility of Coppin State Athletics.

Golf also opens recruiting into new regions and introduces the Eagles brand to tournaments throughout the Mid-Atlantic and beyond. It represents another step forward as Coppin continues growing its athletic department and providing more opportunities for students to compete at the NCAA Division I level.

MSB Take

One of the best stories in college athletics is watching a brand-new program write its own history.

Every statistic this season will set a school record. Every tournament appearance becomes a milestone. Every improvement becomes part of the foundation future Eagles teams will build upon.

Maryland Sports Blog will be following Coppin State men’s golf throughout its inaugural campaign as the Eagles look to establish themselves one round, one tournament, and one season at a time. This is more than a schedule release—it is the beginning of a brand-new chapter in Coppin State athletics.
