Coppin State Softball 2026 Season Recap: Eagles Show Progress, Earn MEAC Tournament Berth

The Coppin State University softball team took a significant step forward during the 2026 season. While the final record of 8-25 may not jump off the page, the Eagles more than doubled their win total from 2025, improved their conference performance, and qualified for the MEAC Tournament. For a program still building toward sustained success, that represented meaningful progress.
Under the leadership of head coach Tyra Perry, Coppin showed greater competitiveness throughout the spring. The Eagles finished 7-14 in MEAC play after going just 3-18 in conference action the year before. That improvement was enough to secure the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament.

MEAC Tournament: Qualified as No. 6 seed
The season featured several bright spots, including all-conference honors, offensive improvement, and several competitive performances against conference rivals.
Fast Start at the HBCU Invitational
Coppin opened the season at the HBCU Invitational in Georgia. The Eagles dropped games against North Carolina A&T and Florida A&M before exploding for a 13-2 victory over Alcorn State. The win showcased the offensive potential of the lineup and gave the team confidence heading into the remainder of the season.
Although consistency remained a challenge, that offensive breakout foreshadowed several strong performances later in the season.
MEAC Play Brings Improvement
Conference play became the story of the season.
After struggling through much of the nonconference schedule, Coppin began finding success against familiar MEAC opponents. The Eagles won seven conference games and remained in the postseason race throughout April. Several key victories helped secure a tournament berth.
The program’s improvement was particularly evident when comparing recent seasons:
| Season | Record | MEAC Record |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 23-22 | 15-6 |
| 2025 | 3-28 | 3-18 |
| 2026 | 8-25 | 7-14 |
The Eagles nearly doubled their conference win total and showed they could compete with the middle tier of the league.
Brooklyn Tapusoa Emerges as a Star
The biggest individual story of the season was the outstanding play of Brooklyn Tapusoa.
Tapusoa earned First Team All-MEAC honors and established herself as one of the conference’s top hitters. Throughout the season, she provided power, run production, and leadership in the middle of the lineup.
Whenever Coppin’s offense got rolling, Tapusoa was usually at the center of it.
Her all-conference recognition reflected a season in which she consistently delivered against conference competition and helped keep the Eagles competitive even when facing stronger opponents.
Julianna Mejia Delivers All Season
Shortstop Julianna Mejia put together one of the best all-around seasons on the roster.
Mejia earned Third Team All-MEAC recognition and became one of Coppin’s most dependable offensive contributors. Her ability to get on base, collect extra-base hits, and provide steady defense made her one of the team’s most valuable players.
One of her best performances came in a game against Towson when she collected two doubles and scored twice despite the Eagles falling 10-6.
Emily Quintero Earns Conference Honors
Emily Quintero joined Tapusoa and Mejia on the All-MEAC list.
Quintero’s Third Team selection highlighted the depth that Coppin developed during the season. The Eagles had multiple players capable of producing offensively and making key plays in the field.
Having three all-conference selections represented one of the program’s biggest accomplishments in 2026.
Other Key Contributors
Several additional players played important roles throughout the season:
Aniyah Haley
Haley frequently sparked the offense from the top of the lineup. One of her best games came against Towson when she recorded three hits.
Leslie Sereno
Sereno delivered timely offense and provided run production throughout the year. Against Towson, she drove in two runs and recorded multiple hits.
Cameran Corbett
Corbett consistently provided quality at-bats and was among the team’s most reliable hitters during the second half of the season.
Kylee Sandino
The catcher handled a young pitching staff while also contributing offensively throughout conference play.
Best Wins of the Season
Coppin State 13, Alcorn State 2
The Eagles exploded offensively during the HBCU Invitational, recording one of their most complete performances of the season. The run-rule victory demonstrated the potential of the lineup when everything clicked.
Conference Victories Fuel Tournament Run
Several MEAC wins during March and April ultimately proved crucial in securing the sixth seed in the conference tournament. Those victories showed the growth of a roster that competed much more effectively than it had a year earlier.
Toughest Stretch
The Eagles faced several difficult stretches during the season.
An eight-game losing streak to close the regular season dropped the overall record and prevented Coppin from climbing higher in the MEAC standings. Despite those losses, the work accomplished earlier in conference play allowed the Eagles to hold onto a tournament berth.
The nonconference schedule also featured numerous challenging opponents, including Towson, Florida A&M, North Carolina A&T, and other regional programs.
MEAC Tournament Appearance
One of the biggest accomplishments of the season was simply reaching postseason play.
Coppin secured the No. 6 seed and advanced to the MEAC Softball Championship in Norfolk. Tournament qualification rewarded the improvement shown throughout conference play and gave the program valuable postseason experience.
The Eagles ultimately entered the tournament facing a difficult path but demonstrated that the gap between themselves and the rest of the conference had narrowed.

Looking Ahead to 2027
The record may not fully reflect the progress Coppin State made in 2026.
The Eagles improved their conference win total, earned a postseason berth, and produced three All-MEAC performers. Those accomplishments provide a foundation for future growth. With Tapusoa, Mejia, Quintero, and several other contributors helping establish a stronger culture, the program enters 2027 with momentum and a realistic chance to continue climbing the MEAC standings.
For Maryland Sports Blog, this season marked an encouraging chapter for a program that often flies under the radar. The Eagles showed resilience, developed several standout players, and took an important step toward becoming a consistent contender in the MEAC.
