Colton Cowser’s spectacular catch saves Orioles in 2-1 win over Rockies

The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Colorado Rockies, 2-1, Monday night at Coors Field, but the final score hardly tells the story.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning and the potential winning run at second base, Rockies outfielder Jake McCarthy drove an Andrew Kittredge sinker 425 feet toward the center-field wall. For a moment, it appeared Baltimore was about to lose on a walk-off home run.

Colton Cowser had other ideas.

Cowser tracked the baseball to the wall, jumped and reached beyond the fence to make a remarkable catch, robbing McCarthy of a two-run homer and preserving Baltimore’s fourth consecutive victory.

The Orioles improved to 69-69 and reached .500 for the first time since April. Baltimore has now won eight of its past 10 games and entered September only a half-game behind the final American League Wild Card position.

Cowser Delivers the Play of the Night

The Orioles carried a 2-1 advantage into the bottom of the ninth after getting another solid performance from their bullpen.

Kittredge retired the first batter before Troy Johnston doubled, immediately putting the tying run in scoring position. After another out, Ryan Ritter pinch-ran at second and McCarthy came to the plate.

McCarthy crushed Kittredge’s 95-mph sinker with an exit velocity of 102.9 mph and a projected distance of 425 feet. Cowser sprinted back, timed his jump and reached over the center-field fence to take the home run away.

Orioles manager Craig Albernaz did not undersell the moment afterward.

“It’s the best play I’ve ever seen,” Albernaz said.

Kittredge consequently earned his ninth save of the season while Cowser supplied one of Baltimore’s most memorable defensive plays of 2026.

Povich Gives Orioles Exactly What They Needed

Baltimore recalled left-hander Cade Povich from Triple-A Norfolk before the game, and Povich gave the Orioles five strong innings at one of baseball’s most difficult places to pitch.

Povich surrendered just one run on five hits and three walks while striking out four over five innings.

Colorado finally broke through in the fourth inning. Hunter Goodman opened the inning with a double and eventually scored when Jordan Beck delivered a two-out RBI single, giving the Rockies a 1-0 lead.

Povich limited the damage to the single run and kept Baltimore within striking distance.

Considering the circumstances, it was an important outing. Povich had been recalled earlier Monday as the Orioles continued managing their pitching staff for the stretch run.

Basallo Answers Immediately

Baltimore did not trail for long.

Dylan Beavers opened the fifth inning with a double before Samuel Basallo drove a ball off the right-center-field wall for an RBI double, bringing Beavers home and tying the game at 1-1.

Basallo also made an impact defensively.

In the sixth inning, Mickey Moniak initially appeared to steal second base. Baltimore challenged the play, and replay overturned the call after Basallo’s throw caught Moniak.

The rookie catcher continues to show why he remains such an important piece of Baltimore’s future.

Orioles Manufacture the Winning Run

Baltimore finished the game with only four hits, compared with Colorado’s eight, so the Orioles needed to manufacture their second run.

They did exactly that in the seventh.

Coby Mayo, Basallo and Blaze Alexander drew walks to load the bases with one out. Cowser then hit a ground ball that initially appeared to result in an inning-ending double play.

Baltimore challenged the call at first base.

Replay showed Cowser was safe, overturning the double play and allowing Mayo to score the go-ahead run.

Cowser officially received an RBI on the fielder’s choice, giving Baltimore a 2-1 advantage without recording a hit in the inning.

That run ultimately proved decisive.

Bullpen Protects the Lead

A 98-minute weather delay interrupted the game following the fifth inning and ended Povich’s night.

Grant Wolfram took over and delivered two scoreless innings, eventually earning the victory to improve to 6-2. Baltimore’s relief corps kept Colorado off the scoreboard before Kittredge handled the ninth.

The Rockies had opportunities throughout the game and finished with twice as many hits as Baltimore, but the Orioles made the plays they needed defensively.

Colorado fell to 52-86 and extended its home losing streak to a franchise-record 10 games.

Orioles Finally Climb Back to .500

The significance of Monday’s victory goes well beyond winning the opener of a series against the Rockies.

Baltimore is 69-69.

For the first time since April, the Orioles have completely erased their losing record.

That would have seemed unlikely earlier this season, but Baltimore has changed the direction of its year. The Orioles have won four consecutive games and eight of their past 10 while pushing themselves directly into the American League Wild Card race.

The Orioles did not overpower Colorado Monday night. They recorded four hits, scored only twice and needed a replay challenge to produce the eventual winning run.

They still found a way to win.

Sometimes that is exactly what playoff contenders have to do.

This was not Baltimore’s prettiest win of the season. It might have been one of its most important.

The Orioles came into Coors Field after sweeping the Athletics and easily could have experienced a letdown against a Colorado club buried near the bottom of the standings. Instead, Baltimore survived an unusual pitcher’s duel, a lengthy weather delay and a ninth-inning scare.

Most importantly, the Orioles are finally back to .500.

That matters psychologically as much as mathematically. Baltimore has spent months trying to dig out of the hole created early in the season. Now the Orioles enter September with a clean slate at 69-69 and a legitimate opportunity to make the postseason.

Cowser’s catch could become one of those plays remembered long after the regular season ends.

Had the baseball cleared the fence, Baltimore would have suffered a brutal 3-2 walk-off loss. Instead, Cowser turned it into the final out of a fourth consecutive victory.

The Orioles still have work to do, and scoring two runs against Colorado is hardly an offensive performance worth celebrating. But winning teams sometimes have to steal games when the bats are quiet.

Cowser quite literally stole this one.

Baltimore enters September alive, surging and finally back to even.

That is a dramatically different position than the Orioles found themselves in only a few weeks ago.
