The Mountaineers improved to 2-0 in Metro Conference play for the second time in three seasons, marking consecutive four-goal games for the first time since 1994. This followed a 4-3 win over Marist the previous weekend.
Christian Kyriacou opens and closes scoring
Kyriacou opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a header from a Lincoln Bauer cross into the left corner. Later, Iona’s Florian Schutt was issued a red card for denying Abou Cherif a goal-scoring opportunity, reducing the Gaels to ten men.
Mount St. Mary’s scored all three of its second-half goals within a five-minute span. Cherif scored his second consecutive game goal in the 71st minute. Oliver Barta then netted his first goal for the Mountaineers 80 seconds later on a pass from Oliver Jorgensen. Kyriacou completed his brace in the 74th after a setup from Noah Kaiser and Bauer on the left side of the box.
Ryan Collins made two saves to record the clean sheet, while Mount St. Mary’s defense limited Iona to just two shots on goal throughout the match.
