McDaniel College men’s soccer suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, falling 2-1 to Ursinus in Collegeville, Pa. Matthew McFadden scored the game-winning penalty kick three minutes into the second half after being fouled inside the box.
McDaniel College dropped to 6-1-1 overall and 1-1 in Centennial Conference play. Ursinus improved to 4-3-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play while snapping a four-game losing streak against McDaniel College.
Ursinus Takes Early Lead
Ursinus opened the scoring in the 17th minute on its first shot of the game. Eliot Bowen scored for the Bears, with McFadden providing the assist, as Ursinus carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.
McDaniel College held a 6-5 edge in first-half shots, but Ursinus put four of its five attempts on goal. Josiah Moore saved McDaniel College’s lone first-half shot on goal, while Gavin Yartymyk turned away three of Ursinus’ final four first-half shots on frame.
McDaniel College Men’s Soccer Cuts Into Deficit
McFadden doubled Ursinus’ lead with his penalty kick early in the second half. McDaniel College responded in the 57th minute when Callen Kleinschmidt scored the first goal of his career off an assist from Eyuel Reta.
The assist marked Reta’s first point of the season. McDaniel College could not find an equalizer, and Ursinus held an 11-8 advantage in shots during the final 45 minutes.
Ursinus finished with a 16-14 edge in shots, while both teams recorded four corner kicks. Yartymyk and Moore each finished with four saves.
McDaniel College Men’s Soccer Visits Johns Hopkins
The victory was Ursinus’ first at home against McDaniel College since Oct. 25, 2014. McDaniel College continues its three-game road trip Wednesday at Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
