Capitals welcome the Red Wings to town for pre season game 2

Tonight, the Washington Capitals play their second pre season game and its against the Detroit Red Wings. Tonight is a little different than previous pre season games. Normally, in seasons past, the head coach would wait until the last two games to play veteran players such as Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson. Head Coach Spencer Carbery is having them play tonight.

It is reported that last year’s first round pick Ivan Miroshnichenko is going to be playing on the top line alongside Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom. This is a really big opportunity for Ivan, as he was originally projected to be a top 5 pick and ended up going 20th overall and has showcased a lot of talent and wisdom for a young player. He also beat Hodgkin Lymphoma and its in full remission.

While the team is dealing with a few injuries to key veteran players, this is giving the coaching staff a very good look at some of the younger players who normally skate for the AHL affiliate the Hershey Bears. This is a very good issue to have, because it allows the defense to get younger and get players who skate faster on the team and also get an oppertunity that they may not have gotten for a few more years.
