Capitals sign Caleb Herbert
The Washington Capitals have announced that they have signed center Caleb Herbert to a two-year entry-level contract. Herbert was drafted back in 2010 in the fifth round of the draft. Herbert has been spending the past three seasons playing college hockey at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
Herbert will report to the Hershey Bears.

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have signed center Caleb Herbert to a two-year, entry-level contract beginning the 2014-15 season, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.
Herbert, 22, was drafted by the Capitals in the fifth round, 142nd overall, in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft and spent the last three seasons at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Herbert recorded 31 points (12 goals, 19 assists) and 85 penalty minutes in 36 games with the Bulldogs this season and led the team in points, assists and penalty minutes. The St. Paul, Minn., native was named to the 2013-14 National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Academic All-Conference Team.
In 2012-13, Herbert finished the season ranked second among Minnesota Duluth skaters in assists (19), third in penalty minutes (53), fourth in points (25) sixth in goals (6) and earned Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) All-Academic Team honors. As a freshman in 2011-12, he registered 33 points (14 goals, 19 assists) and 30 penalty minutes in 41 games with the Bulldogs. Herbert ranked eighth among NCAA freshman in points, fourth among Minnesota Duluth skaters in points and fifth on the team in goals and assists. Herbert was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week on Nov. 22, 2011, and received the Jerry Chumola Award as the Bulldogs’ Rookie of the Year.
Prior to enrolling at Minnesota Duluth, Herbert played for the Sioux City Musketeers of the United States Hockey League (USHL). Herbert led the Musketeers in goals (23) and points (50) and was selected to represent the Western Conference at the 2011 USHL All-Star Game. The 6’0”, 185-pound center attended Bloomington Jefferson High School in Minnesota and was chosen as a finalist for Minnesota Mr. Hockey as a senior in 2009-10.
Herbert will join to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL) on a tryout agreement.
