The Washington Capitals defeated the New Jersey Devils 4-2 Saturday afternoon at Capital One Arena, scoring four unanswered goals after falling behind early in the first period. Ryan Leonard delivered a spectacular power-play goal, while Ilya Protas, Dylan Strome and Boone Jenner scored during a dominant offensive performance. Goaltender Logan Thompson finished with 29 saves as Washington secured its second consecutive victory and improved to 5-3-0 on the season.

The Capitals controlled much of the opening 40 minutes, using their speed, puck movement and aggressive forechecking to create scoring opportunities against New Jersey. Washington scored three times in the second period to turn a 1-1 tie into a commanding 4-1 advantage entering the final frame. Although the Devils generated significant pressure in the third period, Thompson prevented New Jersey from mounting a serious comeback. The victory also continued Washington’s strong play on home ice, where the Capitals have posted a 15-2-2 record over their past 19 games dating to January 31.

First Period: Leonard Answers Early Devils Goal

New Jersey opened the scoring at 10:04 of the first period when Arseny Gritsyuk fired a shot from the left side that slipped past Thompson through traffic. The goal came just one second after a Devils power play expired, giving New Jersey an early 1-0 advantage. Dawson Mercer and Stefan Noesen collected assists on the opening goal. Washington responded by increasing its offensive pressure and eventually capitalized on a power-play opportunity late in the period.

Leonard produced the game’s most impressive individual play at 16:42, carrying the puck nearly the length of the ice before splitting New Jersey defenders and beating goaltender Jake Allen. The rookie forward displayed outstanding puck control and confidence, maneuvering through the defense before finishing with a beautiful move around Allen. Jakob Chychrun and Thompson received assists on Leonard’s third goal of the season, with Thompson earning the sixth assist of his NHL career. The power-play goal tied the game 1-1 and gave Washington momentum heading into the first intermission.

Second Period: Capitals Take Complete Control

Washington wasted little time taking its first lead of the afternoon, scoring just 1:16 into the second period. Alex Ovechkin delivered an excellent cross-ice pass to Ilya Protas, who finished the play with a wrist shot into the upper corner of the net. Vincent Desharnais also received an assist on the goal, which gave Washington a 2-1 advantage. Ovechkin’s assist was the 761st of his NHL career, moving him within one of tying Nicklas Backstrom for the Capitals’ franchise record.

The Capitals extended their lead to 3-1 at 4:36 when Strome scored his first goal of the season. Washington executed another strong offensive sequence, with Alex Tuch and Jordan Kyrou helping move the puck into a dangerous scoring position. Strome collected the puck near the right side of the crease and lifted a backhand shot past Allen. The goal gave Washington a two-goal cushion and demonstrated the effectiveness of its offensive depth.

Jenner added Washington’s fourth goal at 11:14, capitalizing on a rebound near the front of the New Jersey net. Desharnais directed a shot toward the goal, and the puck deflected into an area where Jenner could finish from close range. Martin Fehervary earned the secondary assist, while Desharnais recorded his second helper of the afternoon. Jenner’s goal gave him four in eight games with Washington and completed a stretch of four consecutive Capitals goals.

Third Period: Thompson Protects the Lead

New Jersey responded with a much stronger third period, putting 17 shots on goal while limiting Washington to five. The Devils generated several dangerous scoring opportunities during the opening minutes, forcing Thompson to make difficult saves to maintain the three-goal advantage. Washington struggled to sustain the same offensive pressure it demonstrated earlier in the game, but its goaltender remained composed throughout the period. Thompson stopped 16 shots in the final 20 minutes, providing the stability Washington needed to close out the victory.

The Devils finally broke through with 19 seconds remaining when Timo Meier scored a power-play goal from the right circle. Gritsyuk and Jesper Boqvist assisted on the goal, which reduced Washington’s lead to 4-2. However, New Jersey had little time remaining to threaten the outcome, and the Capitals finished the afternoon with another important early-season victory. Thompson ended the contest with 29 saves on 31 shots, while Allen stopped 21 of Washington’s 25 shots.

Ovechkin Approaches Another Franchise Milestone

Although Ovechkin did not score against New Jersey, the Capitals captain contributed an important assist on Protas’ go-ahead goal. His 761st career assist brought him within one of Backstrom’s franchise record, adding another milestone to his remarkable NHL career. Ovechkin also participated in his 347th career comeback victory, tying Joe Thornton for second in league history behind Patrick Marleau’s 352. His ability to contribute through playmaking remains valuable as Washington continues developing its younger offensive talent.

Capitals Continue Building Early-Season Momentum

Washington’s victory highlighted several encouraging developments, particularly the offensive contributions from Leonard, Protas and Jenner. Leonard continues demonstrating why he is considered an important part of the franchise’s future, while Jenner has provided valuable scoring depth since joining the Capitals. Desharnais contributed two assists, and Thompson delivered another dependable performance in goal. Washington will look to carry that momentum into Tuesday’s home matchup against the Los Angeles Kings.

MSB Take

The Capitals delivered one of their more complete offensive performances of the young season, showing the ability to respond after surrendering the opening goal. Leonard’s outstanding individual effort was the turning point, but Washington’s three-goal second period demonstrated that the team can generate offense throughout its lineup. The combination of young talent, experienced veterans and strong goaltending gives Washington several encouraging reasons for optimism. If the Capitals can consistently maintain the intensity they displayed during the first two periods, they should remain competitive against the Metropolitan Division’s stronger opponents.

The biggest concern from Saturday’s victory was Washington’s inability to maintain offensive pressure during the third period. New Jersey outshot the Capitals 17-5 in the final frame, and the result could have been considerably closer without Thompson’s excellent goaltending. Nevertheless, the Capitals earned two important points, Leonard continued his development and Ovechkin moved closer to another franchise record. Washington now has an opportunity to build on consecutive victories when Los Angeles visits Capital One Arena on Tuesday.
