Capitals recall Strachan

The Washington Capitals recalled Tyson Strachan from the Hershey Bears yesterday. The Capitals are out of the playoff picture and have struggled on defense all season. Strachan played in 12 games with the Caps already this season.

ARLINGTON, VA. – The Washington Capitals have recalled defenseman Tyson Strachan from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League (AHL), vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Strachan, 29, recorded one assist and 24 penalty minutes in 12 games with Washington this season. The Melfort, Saskatchewan, native made his Capitals debut on Nov. 15 at Detroit and earned his first Capitals point with an assist on Jan. 31 at Detroit. In 132 career NHL games with St. Louis, Florida and Washington, Strachan has recorded 14 points (one goal, 13 assists) and 151 penalty minutes.

Strachan appeared in 57 games with Hershey this season, tallying 18 points (three goals, 15 assists) and 56 penalty minutes. The 6’3”, 210-pound defenseman leads the team in plus/minus (+13) and ranks second among Bears defensemen in assists. In 273 career AHL games with Albany, Peoria, San Antonio and Hershey, Strachan has earned 86 points (15 goals, 71 assists) and 326 penalty minutes. Strachan spent four seasons at Ohio State University and was drafted by Carolina in the fifth round, 137th overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. The Capitals signed Strachan as a free agent on July 8, 2013.
