Rangers Strike First on the Power Play

New York entered Friday’s contest riding a four-game winning streak and looking to continue its impressive early-season performance. The Rangers capitalized on Washington’s penalty trouble in the opening period, converting their second power-play opportunity into the game’s first goal. Alexis Lafrenière scored at 10:17, beating Thompson with a wrist shot from the high slot after receiving a pass from J.T. Miller. Pavel Dorofeyev earned the secondary assist as New York took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Washington generated several opportunities against Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin but struggled to solve the former Vezina Trophy winner. Alex Ovechkin had a scoring opportunity from his familiar position on the power play, but Shesterkin made the save. The Capitals continued pushing offensively, looking to establish possession and create opportunities around the net. Despite their efforts, Washington finished the opening period without a goal and needed a stronger second period to change the momentum.

Liljegren and Jenner Turn the Game Around

Washington found its offensive rhythm early in the second period, eventually breaking through against Shesterkin. Defenseman Timothy Liljegren scored his first goal of the season at 6:08, firing a one-timer from the left point to tie the contest at 1-1. Dylan Strome and Ryan Leonard collected assists on the goal, which also marked Liljegren’s first as a member of the Capitals. The goal provided Washington with an important momentum boost after New York controlled the scoreboard through the opening 20 minutes.

The second period also featured a frightening moment when Shesterkin suffered a lower-body injury while attempting to return to his crease. His right skate appeared to catch against the goalpost, causing his leg to bend awkwardly as he fell into the net. Shesterkin remained on the ice for several minutes before teammates helped him off without putting weight on his injured leg. Backup Dylan Garand entered the game at 8:20 of the period, replacing Shesterkin, who had stopped 13 of Washington’s first 14 shots.

Washington capitalized late in the period when Jenner intercepted an attempted clearance by Rangers forward Cole Beaudoin. Jenner quickly moved into scoring position and fired a wrist shot past Garand at 17:38, giving the Capitals their first lead of the evening. The unassisted goal was Jenner’s first since joining Washington during the offseason, making it an important early contribution from one of the team’s newest additions. His goal sent the Capitals into the second intermission holding a 2-1 advantage with 20 minutes remaining.

Thompson and Washington’s Defense Finish the Job

The Rangers attempted to mount a comeback during the third period, but Washington’s defensive effort prevented New York from finding the equalizer. Thompson remained composed in goal, turning away scoring opportunities while the Capitals protected their narrow advantage. Washington also received a timely defensive contribution from its penalty-killing unit, which helped limit New York’s opportunities after the Rangers scored on the power play in the opening period. The Capitals maintained their one-goal lead deep into the final minutes, forcing New York to take additional offensive risks.

New York eventually pulled Garand for an extra attacker, hoping to generate one final opportunity to tie the game. Washington held firm defensively before Wilson scored into the empty net with just one second remaining in regulation. Vincent Desharnais recorded the assist on Wilson’s second goal of the season, completing the Capitals’ 3-1 victory. Thompson finished with a .955 save percentage, while Washington outshot New York 27-22 and secured another important early-season Metropolitan Division victory.

Capitals’ New Additions Making an Early Impact

Two of Washington’s three goals came from players who were not part of the Capitals’ roster at the beginning of last season. Jenner, who signed a four-year, $23 million contract during the offseason, demonstrated the offensive instincts that Washington hoped to add to its forward group. Liljegren, acquired from the San Jose Sharks in March, provided an important contribution from the blue line with his second-period equalizer. Their performances highlighted the potential value of Washington’s roster additions as the Capitals continue building chemistry during the opening weeks of the season.

Thompson also continued establishing himself as a dependable presence between the pipes, allowing just one goal against a Rangers team that entered the night with considerable offensive momentum. His performance helped Washington overcome an early deficit without requiring an offensive explosion from its biggest stars. Ovechkin remained without a goal through the Capitals’ first four games, but Washington demonstrated that it can generate offense from other areas of its lineup. With Wilson, Jenner and Liljegren contributing, the Capitals showed the balanced scoring needed to remain competitive throughout the season.

What’s Next for Washington?

The Capitals will remain at Capital One Arena for their next matchup against the Seattle Kraken on Sunday, October 11. Washington enters that contest with a 3-1-0 record and an opportunity to extend its winning streak to three games. The Rangers, meanwhile, return to New York to face the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday while awaiting additional information about Shesterkin’s injury. For Washington, the immediate priority will be maintaining its defensive consistency and continuing to receive contributions throughout the lineup.

MSB Take

Friday’s victory was an encouraging performance for a Capitals team that has shown resilience early in the season. Washington fell behind against a Rangers club that had won four consecutive games, but the Capitals remained patient and eventually took advantage of their opportunities. Jenner’s game-winning goal was particularly encouraging because Washington needs its offseason additions to make meaningful contributions throughout the year. Thompson’s steady goaltending also gave the Capitals an opportunity to win without requiring Ovechkin to carry the offense.

The biggest takeaway is that Washington appears capable of winning games in different ways, something that will be essential over an 82-game schedule. The Capitals scored five goals against Pittsburgh in their previous outing but needed only two goals against New York before Wilson’s empty-netter secured Friday’s victory. There are still areas that need improvement, particularly avoiding unnecessary penalties and generating more production on the power play. Nevertheless, a 3-1-0 start and a victory over a division rival provide plenty of reasons for optimism as Washington continues its early-season homestand.
