Cameron Edge Leads Morgan State Past Villanova in 38-35 Thriller

Morgan State quarterback Cameron Edge delivered one of the greatest passing performances in program history and scored the game-winning touchdown with 36 seconds remaining as the Bears stunned Villanova, 38-35, Saturday afternoon at Villanova Stadium.
Edge completed 31 of 40 passes for 444 yards and three touchdowns while adding two rushing touchdowns. His 444 passing yards rank third in Morgan State history, trailing only LeJominick Washington’s 515 yards in 2001 and Orlando Persell’s 484 in 1992.
More importantly, Edge delivered when Morgan State desperately needed him. The Bears watched a 24-14 halftime advantage disappear, trailed twice during a wild fourth quarter and even appeared to squander their final opportunity when Edge threw an interception in the Villanova end zone with less than three minutes remaining.
Morgan State’s defense gave him one more chance.
Edge made sure it counted.
The Maryland transfer engineered a six-play, 56-yard drive in just 1:15 and finished it himself with a two-yard touchdown run, putting Morgan State ahead 38-35 with 36 seconds remaining. Villanova drove into position for a potential tying field goal, but Dominic LeBlanc’s 47-yard attempt went wide right as time expired.
The dramatic victory improved Morgan State to 4-1 for the first time since 2009 and gave head coach Damon Wilson’s program another significant regional victory one week after defeating Towson, 41-26.
Morgan State Comes Out Firing
Morgan State wasted little time putting pressure on Villanova.
Edge scored on a five-yard run less than five minutes into the game, completing a quick three-play, 84-yard scoring possession. Villanova answered when Isaiah Ragland scored from two yards out, tying the game at seven.
The Bears continued attacking through the air and took control before halftime. Morgan State scored 14 points in the first quarter and another 10 in the second, carrying a 24-14 advantage into the locker room.
Edge’s ability to push the football downfield changed the complexion of the game. Villanova could not simply crowd the line of scrimmage and force Morgan State to grind out possessions.
The Bears had legitimate explosive-play ability.
Justin Perry became Edge’s biggest downfield weapon. Perry finished with five receptions for 152 yards, including a 79-yard catch, while Joseph Towler added four receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown. Keith Jenkins Jr. caught eight passes for 87 yards and another score.
Villanova Comes Storming Back
The Wildcats refused to go away.
Villanova scored the only touchdown of the third quarter, trimming Morgan State’s advantage to 24-21 and setting up a chaotic final 15 minutes.
Ragland then scored on a 22-yard run early in the fourth quarter, completing Villanova’s comeback and putting the Wildcats ahead 28-24. The touchdown gave Villanova its first lead of the afternoon and put Morgan State in a position where it had to respond immediately.
Edge did exactly that.
Less than a minute later, he connected with Towler for a 64-yard touchdown, swinging the lead right back to Morgan State at 31-28.
Villanova needed only another 1:42 to answer.
Ja’briel Mace exploded for a 52-yard touchdown run, putting the Wildcats back in front 35-31. Mace finished with 103 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Ragland added 76 yards and three touchdowns as Villanova repeatedly attacked Morgan State on the ground.
Four lead changes ultimately came during the fourth quarter.
Edge’s Interception Appears to End It
Morgan State responded to Mace’s touchdown by driving deep into Villanova territory.
With the Bears facing fourth-and-7 from the Villanova 13, Edge tried to make a play in the end zone. Villanova safety Jamie Tyson intercepted the pass with 2:45 remaining.
At that moment, Morgan State appeared to have missed its opportunity.
Villanova held a 35-31 lead and needed to move the chains and drain the remaining clock.
Morgan State’s defense refused to let it happen.
The Bears forced Villanova into a three-and-out that actually lost six yards. The Wildcats punted, and Morgan State took possession at its own 44 with 1:51 remaining.
Edge had another opportunity.
Edge Delivers the Game-Winning Drive
Morgan State soon faced another potential season-defining moment.
On fourth-and-5 from its own 49, Edge connected with Perry for a huge 38-yard completion. Instead of the game ending with Villanova taking possession, Morgan State suddenly stood deep inside Wildcats territory.
Edge continued moving the Bears toward the goal line and eventually reached the Villanova 2.
With 36 seconds remaining, Edge powered across the goal line for his second rushing touchdown of the afternoon.
Morgan State led 38-35.
For a quarterback who had thrown an interception only minutes earlier, the response was impressive. Edge did not become conservative or allow the mistake to alter how he played the position.
He attacked.
Villanova Gets One Last Chance
Even then, the game was not finished.
Villanova received the football at its own 33 with 30 seconds remaining. Pat McQuaide quickly moved the Wildcats downfield, completing passes of 13 and 11 yards during the frantic final possession.
Villanova reached the Morgan State 30 and called timeout with two seconds remaining.
LeBlanc came onto the field for a 47-yard attempt that would have sent the game to overtime.
The kick went wide right.
Morgan State survived.
Edge Has Historic Afternoon
Edge was the story of the game.
His 444 passing yards represented the third-highest single-game total in Morgan State history. He also accounted for five touchdowns — three passing and two rushing — while completing nearly 78 percent of his throws.
Morgan State finished with 521 yards of total offense, averaging an impressive 8.4 yards per play. Villanova generated 457 yards and averaged 7.3 yards per play, making this one of the most explosive games either team has played this season.
The contrast between the offenses was particularly interesting.
Morgan State dominated through the air with 444 passing yards but managed only 77 rushing yards. Villanova countered with 191 rushing yards and scored all five of its touchdowns on the ground.
McQuaide completed 22 of 29 passes for 266 yards with one interception. Mace led Villanova with 103 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Ragland accounted for three rushing scores.
Ultimately, Morgan State’s explosiveness through the air proved just enough.
Bears Continue Impressive Start
Morgan State’s victory carries significance beyond simply adding another win to its record.
The Bears are now 4-1, their best five-game start since 2009. They have also produced consecutive impressive victories over regional opponents after defeating Towson the previous week.
Villanova entered Saturday as an established FCS program and had reached the national semifinals last season, something Wilson emphasized following the victory. For Morgan State, going on the road and winning a game of this magnitude provides another indication that the program is moving forward.
Morgan State also demonstrated something Saturday that good football teams eventually have to learn how to do:
Win when everything does not go according to plan.
The Bears surrendered a 10-point halftime advantage.
They allowed Villanova to rush for 191 yards and five touchdowns.
They committed eight penalties.
Edge threw what could easily have been a game-ending interception.
Yet Morgan State still found a way to win.
Up Next
Morgan State finally returns to Hughes Stadium next Saturday, Oct. 10, when the Bears host Robert Morris at noon. The matchup will serve as Morgan State’s Homecoming game.
The Bears still have work to do before beginning MEAC competition later this month, particularly against the run. However, Morgan State will return to Baltimore with a 4-1 record and considerable momentum.
MSB Take
This feels like one of the biggest wins Morgan State has earned under Damon Wilson.
Beating Towson was significant. Following it by going on the road and beating Villanova makes the Towson victory look less like one great afternoon and more like evidence that Morgan State has taken another step as a program.
Cameron Edge changes what is possible for this team.
Morgan State has frequently relied on defense and physical football under Wilson. Saturday showed the Bears can win a completely different type of game. Villanova scored 35 points and rushed for nearly 200 yards, meaning Morgan State needed its quarterback to go win the football game.
Edge did exactly that.
Throwing for 444 yards is impressive. Accounting for five touchdowns is impressive. But the most important sequence came after he threw the late interception. Morgan State’s defense got the football back, and Edge immediately went back onto the field and led the winning drive.
That is quarterback play Morgan State can build around.
There are still concerns. The Bears cannot consistently allow opponents to run for nearly 200 yards and expect to survive, especially once MEAC play begins. Eight penalties also need to be cleaned up.
But Morgan State is 4-1.
The Bears have beaten Towson and Villanova in consecutive weeks.
And after years when Morgan State seemed to find heartbreaking ways to lose close games, this team is beginning to find ways to win them.
That might be the most encouraging development of all.
