Bowie Baysox Preview
As the Baltimore Orioles begin their 2014 campaign, the AA affiliate Bowie Baysox also start the race to the playoffs. Looking for a quick start to the season the Baysox have jumped out to a quick 5-1 start after a 4 game sweep over the Harrisburg Senators. After a rainout on April 7, the Baysox had a doubleheader against the Richmond Flying Squirrels, in which they dropped the first game 5-3. Even though Bowie may have suffered their first loss of the season they bounced back in the second game of the day with a walk-off win, coming off the bat of Chih-Hsien Chiang.
The Baysox looked poised for a big season this year featuring 3 players that are also on the 40-man roster for the Orioles. One of those is Dylan Bundy who is currently on the 7-day DL, while recovering from June elbow surgery. Also, on the 40-man roster is 23-year old left-hander Tim Berry who had a great first outing in 2014, throwing 7 strong innings only giving up 3 hits and an unearned run. Other players looking to have breakout years will be, shortstop Sharlon Schoop, second baseman Buck Britton, and catcher Michael Ohlman who is the third Baysox member on the big-league 40-man roster. The pitching staff will be held down by previously mentioned Tim Berry, Tyler Wilson, and Zach Davies the 21-year old right-hander from Chandler, Arizona.
Even though we are only a week into the season, the batting averages are high, and the ERA’s are low. Bowie looks to keep things rolling this week with the rubber match against Richmond today, before heading to Akron for a 4 game series. Gary Kendall hopes to keep his club rolling deep into the postseason this year, and so far they are off to a good start.
