Morgan State vs. Delaware State Football Preview: Bears Look to End Three-Game Losing Streak in MEAC Showdown

By Brian Hradsky

Morgan State will travel to Dover, Delaware, on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2026, for an important Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matchup against the Delaware State Hornets. The Bears enter the contest with a 5-4 overall record and an 0-2 mark in conference play, while Delaware State stands at 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the MEAC. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Alumni Stadium, with the game available on ESPN+. Both programs are looking to strengthen their conference standing as the regular season approaches its conclusion.

Morgan State Looking to End Its Losing Streak

Morgan State began the season with considerable promise, collecting victories over Towson, Villanova and Robert Morris while demonstrating significant improvement under head coach Damon Wilson. However, the Bears have struggled recently, dropping three consecutive games against Tennessee State, Howard and South Carolina State. Their most recent defeat came on Oct. 29, when South Carolina State dominated Morgan State in a 51-10 contest. Saturday’s matchup presents an opportunity for the Bears to regain confidence and return to the form that made them competitive earlier in the season.

Quarterback Cameron Edge will play an important role in determining whether Morgan State can reverse its recent struggles. Edge completed 17 of 28 passes for 144 yards against South Carolina State, but the Bears struggled to establish any offensive rhythm. Morgan State finished that contest with minus-12 rushing yards on 14 attempts, highlighting problems along the offensive line and in the running game. Improving those numbers will be essential against a Delaware State defense capable of disrupting opposing offenses.

The Bears must also find ways to sustain longer offensive possessions and avoid putting unnecessary pressure on their defense. Morgan State demonstrated earlier in the season that it could generate points against quality competition, scoring 41 against Towson and 38 against Villanova. Reestablishing that offensive balance would help the Bears control the tempo and keep Delaware State’s offense off the field. A productive opening quarter could also provide the confidence Morgan State needs after several difficult weeks.

Delaware State Presents a Difficult Road Challenge

Delaware State enters Saturday’s contest with momentum and an opportunity to improve its position in the MEAC standings. The Hornets are led by head coach DeSean Jackson, the former NFL wide receiver whose arrival has generated increased attention around the football program. Delaware State has developed a productive offense that averages approximately 367.7 total yards per game, including 167.3 rushing yards. Those numbers present a significant challenge for a Morgan State defense attempting to recover from its performance against South Carolina State.

The Hornets have also demonstrated the ability to create problems defensively through aggressive play near the line of scrimmage. Kemari Nix has recorded 56 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss, while Jordan Banks has contributed 51 tackles and seven tackles for loss. Their ability to penetrate the backfield could become especially important against a Morgan State offensive line that struggled in its previous appearance. The Bears must account for both defenders when developing their offensive game plan.

Delaware State’s home-field advantage could also influence the outcome of Saturday’s contest. Playing at Alumni Stadium provides the Hornets with a familiar environment as they pursue another conference victory. Morgan State must remain disciplined, particularly in situations where crowd noise and defensive pressure could disrupt offensive communication. Avoiding turnovers and unnecessary penalties will be important for a team attempting to end a losing streak.

Three Keys to Victory for Morgan State

1. Establish the Running Game

Morgan State cannot afford another performance in which its rushing attack becomes ineffective. The Bears need positive yardage on early downs to create manageable passing situations and prevent Delaware State from concentrating exclusively on Edge. A productive running game would also help Morgan State control possession and reduce the number of opportunities available to the Hornets. Even modest improvements on the ground could significantly change the effectiveness of the Bears’ offense.

2. Protect Cameron Edge

Edge needs adequate protection to operate effectively against Delaware State’s defensive front. The Bears allowed three sacks against South Carolina State, contributing to an afternoon filled with negative offensive plays. Morgan State must improve its pass protection, utilize quicker throws when necessary and prevent Delaware State’s defenders from consistently reaching the quarterback. Giving Edge time to identify open receivers could help restore the passing production that contributed to several early-season victories.

3. Limit Explosive Plays

Morgan State’s defense faces a difficult assignment against a Delaware State offense capable of moving the football through both the running and passing games. The Bears must tackle effectively, maintain their assignments and prevent the Hornets from turning routine plays into significant gains. Forcing Delaware State into longer third-down situations would increase Morgan State’s chances of getting off the field. Defensive discipline will be particularly important if the Bears hope to keep the contest close entering the fourth quarter.

MEAC Rivalry Adds Significance

Morgan State and Delaware State share a longstanding conference rivalry that has produced numerous competitive meetings. Morgan State’s official game preview credits the Bears with a 42-27 advantage in the historical series, although the release contains conflicting information about some recent results. Regardless of their historical record, both programs understand the importance of conference victories during the closing weeks of the season. Saturday’s matchup provides another opportunity for each team to strengthen its position within the MEAC.

For Morgan State, the contest represents more than another opportunity to improve its overall record. The Bears have already surpassed their four-win total from the 2025 season, demonstrating progress under Wilson. However, consecutive conference defeats have complicated their pursuit of a successful MEAC campaign. A road victory against Delaware State would provide evidence that Morgan State can translate its overall improvement into conference success.

MSB Take: Morgan State Must Rediscover Its Offensive Identity

Morgan State has shown enough potential this season to suggest that its recent struggles do not fully reflect the team’s capabilities. Victories against Towson and Villanova demonstrated that the Bears could compete effectively when their offense established balance and their defense created opportunities. However, the three-game losing streak has exposed weaknesses that opponents have increasingly exploited. Wilson and his coaching staff must find solutions quickly if Morgan State hopes to finish the regular season on a positive note.

The biggest concern entering Saturday’s matchup is Morgan State’s inability to establish a consistent running game. When opponents can pressure Edge without respecting the rushing attack, the entire offense becomes easier to defend. Delaware State has the defensive personnel to take advantage of those problems, making offensive line improvement particularly important. Morgan State must find a way to produce positive rushing yards and avoid falling behind the chains.

Delaware State enters the contest with several advantages, including home-field familiarity and a more productive rushing attack. However, Morgan State has demonstrated the ability to score against competitive opponents and should not be overlooked. If the Bears protect Edge, limit turnovers and improve their defensive execution, they can remain competitive throughout the afternoon. The matchup could ultimately be decided by which team controls the line of scrimmage and avoids costly mistakes.

MSB Prediction: Delaware State 27, Morgan State 24.

Morgan State has the talent to make this a close contest, but Delaware State’s rushing attack and home-field advantage give the Hornets a slight edge. The Bears should have opportunities to move the football, particularly if Edge receives better protection than he did against South Carolina State. A late defensive stop or turnover could determine the outcome if the teams remain within one possession entering the fourth quarter. Morgan State will need one of its strongest all-around performances of the past month to return home with a victory.
