Capitals Defenseman Dylan McIlrath Clears Waivers, Returns to Hershey Bears After Roster Shakeup

The Washington Capitals have officially assigned veteran defenseman Dylan McIlrath to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League after the 34-year-old cleared NHL waivers Monday. The move brings a familiar leader back to Hershey, where McIlrath captained the Bears to consecutive Calder Cup championships in 2023 and 2024. Washington placed the physical defenseman on waivers Sunday following its acquisition of goaltender Rémi Poirier from the New Jersey Devils. McIlrath went unclaimed, allowing the Capitals to retain his rights while sending him to their top minor league affiliate.

The assignment marks McIlrath’s first return to Hershey since helping the Bears capture their second consecutive championship in June 2024. Although the veteran has spent the past two seasons providing defensive depth in Washington, his limited playing time made him a logical candidate for reassignment. His departure also creates an opportunity for Hershey to reunite with one of the most respected captains in its recent history.

Capitals Make Room Following Rémi Poirier Trade

Washington’s roster adjustment began Sunday when general manager Chris Patrick acquired Poirier from New Jersey in exchange for a seventh-round selection in the 2027 NHL Draft. The 25-year-old goaltender provides additional organizational depth behind Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren. However, acquiring another player required Washington to address its 23-man active roster limit, making a corresponding transaction necessary.

McIlrath became the player selected for reassignment after appearing in just four of Washington’s first 12 games of the 2026-27 season. He had not recorded a point in those appearances, registering three hits and two blocked shots while averaging approximately 6:34 of ice time. His role had become increasingly limited as the Capitals evaluated other defensive options, including recently acquired Jack St. Ivany. With McIlrath clearing waivers, Washington avoided losing an experienced defenseman to another organization.

The move should not necessarily be interpreted as the end of McIlrath’s NHL opportunities. Washington retains the ability to recall him when roster circumstances permit, and his familiarity with the organization remains valuable. For now, however, the Capitals have prioritized roster flexibility while giving McIlrath an opportunity to play more regularly in Hershey.

McIlrath Returns to the Team He Led to Two Calder Cups

McIlrath’s return carries considerable significance for the Hershey Bears because of his contributions to the franchise’s recent championship success. The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native played three seasons with Hershey from 2021 through 2024, appearing in 192 regular-season games and recording seven goals, 25 assists and 301 penalty minutes. His imposing 6-foot-5, 240-pound frame made him one of the team’s most physical defensemen, but his leadership became equally important.

Named Hershey’s captain in October 2022, McIlrath helped guide the Bears through consecutive championship runs that established one of the strongest periods in the organization’s modern history. He appeared in all 43 playoff games during the team’s 2023 and 2024 Calder Cup victories, contributing two goals and four assists. His physical presence, defensive reliability and willingness to stand up for teammates helped establish the identity of both championship teams.

The 2024 championship was particularly memorable because Hershey defeated the Coachella Valley Firebirds in overtime of Game 6 on June 24. McIlrath celebrated by lifting the Calder Cup as team captain, providing a fitting conclusion to his second championship run with the organization. He also represented Hershey as a playing captain at the 2024 AHL All-Star Classic in San Jose.

Veteran Defenseman Brings Championship Experience

McIlrath originally entered professional hockey as the 10th overall selection by the New York Rangers in the 2010 NHL Draft. Although he never developed into a full-time NHL regular, he built a lengthy professional career through physical defense, leadership and perseverance. His NHL experience includes appearances with the Rangers, Florida Panthers, Detroit Red Wings and Washington Capitals.

Across 109 career NHL games, McIlrath has recorded three goals and six assists for nine points. His American Hockey League career has been considerably more extensive, featuring 618 games with Hershey, Grand Rapids, Springfield and Hartford/Connecticut. He has produced 30 goals and 92 assists for 122 points at the AHL level while establishing himself as a dependable veteran.

His championship experience extends beyond Hershey, having previously won the Calder Cup with the Grand Rapids Griffins in 2017. That gives McIlrath three AHL championships entering his latest assignment. Few players returning to the league can offer that combination of experience, postseason success and familiarity with their new teammates’ organization.

What McIlrath’s Return Means for Hershey

For Hershey, the addition provides immediate defensive depth and an established veteran capable of helping stabilize the blue line. McIlrath knows the organization, understands the expectations surrounding the Bears and has already demonstrated his ability to lead the team through demanding playoff runs. His experience could prove especially valuable for younger defensemen developing within Washington’s system.

The Bears entered Monday with a 6-4-0 record, placing them third in the Atlantic Division. Although Hershey has enjoyed considerable success in recent seasons, maintaining consistency throughout an AHL schedule requires experienced players who can contribute in difficult situations. McIlrath’s return gives the coaching staff another option for penalty killing, physical matchups and protecting leads.

The move also provides McIlrath an opportunity to receive more consistent ice time after spending much of the opening month as a healthy scratch in Washington. Regular appearances should allow him to regain his rhythm while continuing to serve as organizational insurance for the Capitals. Whether his assignment becomes a lengthy stay or a temporary stop will depend largely on Washington’s defensive health and future roster decisions.

Washington’s Defensive Depth Continues to Evolve

The Capitals have experienced several changes to their defensive depth chart early in the 2026-27 season. The addition of St. Ivany has provided another option, while Rasmus Sandin’s progress following ACL surgery could eventually affect the team’s roster decisions. Those developments have created increased competition for limited NHL opportunities.

For McIlrath, the situation illustrates the difficult reality facing veteran depth players on competitive NHL rosters. His physicality and leadership remain valuable, but Washington must balance those qualities against the development of younger defensemen and the flexibility required to address injuries. Sending him to Hershey allows the organization to maintain that depth without keeping him in a largely inactive role.

The acquisition of Poirier also introduces another roster consideration because Washington is carrying three goaltenders for the immediate future. Poirier would need to clear waivers before being assigned to Hershey, potentially exposing him to another organization. Washington’s decisions regarding its goaltending depth could therefore influence whether McIlrath receives another NHL opportunity later this season.

Hershey’s Next Game Offers an Immediate Opportunity

The Bears return to action Wednesday, November 4, when they host the Hartford Wolf Pack at GIANT Center. The 7 p.m. contest will feature Milton Hershey School Takeover Night, giving the organization an opportunity to celebrate its longstanding relationship with the school. McIlrath’s availability for the matchup has not yet been confirmed, but his assignment creates the possibility of an immediate return to Hershey’s lineup.

The matchup would also provide an interesting connection to McIlrath’s professional career because he previously played within the Hartford organization. More importantly, it could mark his first regular-season appearance in a Hershey uniform since the 2023-24 campaign. For Bears supporters who remember his championship leadership, seeing McIlrath back on the ice would be a welcome development.

MSB Take: Washington Makes a Practical Move, but Hershey Gets a Major Boost

The Capitals’ decision to send McIlrath to Hershey makes sense from a roster-management perspective, but it also represents a significant gain for their AHL affiliate. Washington needs flexibility as it works through injuries, defensive competition and its evolving goaltending situation. Keeping a veteran defenseman on the NHL roster without providing meaningful playing time offers limited benefits when he can contribute regularly elsewhere.

McIlrath deserves considerable credit for building a professional career defined by persistence and championship success. He may not have become the NHL star envisioned when the Rangers selected him 10th overall in 2010, but three Calder Cup championships demonstrate the value he has provided throughout his career. His leadership helped shape Hershey’s championship identity, and those contributions should not be overlooked simply because his NHL opportunities have been limited.

From Hershey’s perspective, this is one of the most meaningful veteran additions the team could make without surrendering assets. McIlrath understands what it takes to win in the American Hockey League, and he already has a strong connection with the franchise and its supporters. His return should provide a boost in experience, physicality and leadership as the Bears pursue another successful season.

For Washington, the important detail is that McIlrath cleared waivers rather than being claimed by another team. The Capitals retain a dependable depth option while giving him a chance to make an immediate impact in Hershey. If injuries create another opening in Washington, McIlrath could find himself back in the NHL, but for now, one of the Bears’ championship captains is heading home
