Morgan State Bowling Finishes Runner-Up at Seahawk Invite After Heartbreaking 4-3 Championship Loss to Monmouth

By Brian Hradsky

Final Result: Monmouth defeats Morgan State 4-3 in the Seahawk Invite championship match.

STaten Island, N.Y. โ€” Morgan State University’s women’s bowling team came within one victory of capturing the Seahawk Invite championship before falling 4-3 to No. 24 Monmouth University on Sunday, October 25, at Rab’s Country Lanes. The Lady Bears built a commanding 3-1 advantage in the best-of-seven Baker championship series but watched Monmouth win three consecutive games to secure the tournament title. Despite the heartbreaking finish, Morgan State completed an impressive weekend with a 6-3 record and a second-place finish in the eight-team tournament. The performance represented a significant improvement from the Lady Bears’ eighth-place showing at the Golden Bear Invitational one week earlier.

Morgan State Builds Championship Lead

Morgan State entered Sunday’s competition in fifth place, just 78 pins behind second place, and faced a challenging path toward the championship match. The Lady Bears opened the final day with an 891-850 loss to Long Island University despite Briana Mason delivering a team-high game of 226. Rather than allowing the setback to derail their championship hopes, Morgan State responded with two important victories. The Lady Bears defeated Monmouth 996-854 before edging Molloy 896-892 to advance to the tournament final.

The 996-pin performance against Monmouth stood as the highest traditional team score recorded by any program during the weekend. Alexandra Stephen and Amari Thompson each contributed games of 223, while Kyra Italien added a 207 to help Morgan State overwhelm the eventual champions. Stephen continued her strong performance against Molloy, rolling a 217, while Italien contributed a 190 in the narrow four-pin victory. Those performances helped Morgan State move from fifth place into championship contention.

Monmouth Rallies From 3-1 Deficit

Morgan State carried its momentum into the Baker championship series and immediately established control against the nationally ranked Hawks. The Lady Bears captured the opening game 190-147 before winning a dramatic second game 170-169 to take a 2-0 series lead. Monmouth responded with a 160-135 victory in Game 3, but Morgan State answered with an impressive 181-140 performance in the fourth game. Holding a 3-1 advantage, the Lady Bears needed just one additional victory to claim the tournament championship.

Monmouth refused to surrender, winning Game 5 by a 230-196 margin before taking Game 6, 202-161, to force a deciding seventh game. With the championship on the line, both teams battled through a tightly contested final game that remained competitive until the closing frames. Monmouth ultimately escaped with a 171-167 victory, completing its comeback and claiming the Seahawk Invite title. The four-pin difference in the decisive game underscored how close Morgan State came to winning the championship.

Lady Bears Deliver Strong Opening Day

Morgan State established its foundation for the runner-up finish with a 4-1 record during Saturday’s Baker competition. The Lady Bears opened the tournament with an 866-843 victory over Molloy, receiving consistent contributions from Italien and Maya Mayers. Italien filled all 10 of her frames, while Mayers successfully filled nine of 10. The opening victory gave Morgan State an encouraging start against a competitive tournament field.

The Lady Bears followed with an 887-849 victory over Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rival Delaware State. Mason filled nine of 10 frames, while Thompson and Mayers each filled eight to help Morgan State secure another important win. Morgan State then defeated tournament host Wagner 882-738, with Stephen filling nine of 10 frames and Mason filling eight. The three consecutive victories positioned the Lady Bears among the tournament’s strongest early performers.

Morgan State’s winning streak ended with an 880-788 loss to Adelphi in its fourth Saturday match. Olivia Cameron and Mason each filled eight of 10 frames during the setback, providing some consistency despite the team’s defeat. The Lady Bears responded by dominating Caldwell 920-742 in their final match of the day. Italien filled all 10 frames and Mason filled nine, allowing Morgan State to close Saturday with four victories in five matches.

Young Bowlers Provide Encouraging Signs

One of the most encouraging developments for Morgan State was the contribution of several younger bowlers throughout the tournament. Freshmen Mason, Stephen, Thompson and Cameron each played roles in the Lady Bears’ successful weekend, while sophomore Italien provided valuable consistency. Their performances helped Morgan State defeat conference competition, challenge nationally ranked opposition and reach the championship match. The experience should provide an important foundation as the program prepares for the remainder of its 2026-27 season.

Mason continued to emerge as an important contributor after earning all-tournament recognition at the Golden Bear Invitational the previous weekend. She finished fifth individually at that event with 920 pins across five games, averaging 184.00. Her 226 against Long Island at the Seahawk Invite demonstrated her ability to deliver another strong individual performance. Morgan State’s developing lineup now has evidence that it can compete with established programs in meaningful tournament situations.

MSB Take: Morgan State Has Plenty to Build On

Although surrendering a 3-1 championship advantage will undoubtedly sting, Morgan State’s overall performance deserves recognition. The Lady Bears demonstrated resilience by recovering from Sunday’s opening loss and defeating Monmouth decisively in traditional play before reaching the championship round. They also finished the tournament with six victories and pushed a nationally ranked opponent to the final game of a championship series. Those achievements provide legitimate reasons for optimism moving forward.

The biggest lesson from the championship match concerns finishing opportunities against strong opponents. Morgan State had three chances to close out the series but could not prevent Monmouth from building momentum late in the competition. Developing greater consistency in those situations could become an important factor in future championship appearances. If the Lady Bears continue receiving contributions throughout their lineup, they have an opportunity to build on this runner-up finish.

What’s Next for Morgan State Bowling?

Morgan State will return to competition November 14-15 at the CSU Lady Eagles Invitational, hosted by Coppin State University at AMF Woodlawn Lanes in Gwynn Oak, Maryland. The event will give the Lady Bears another opportunity to measure their progress and build momentum before the remainder of their season. Following their second-place performance at the Seahawk Invite, Morgan State will look to turn its encouraging early-season results into another strong tournament showing. The championship loss may have been disappointing, but the Lady Bears demonstrated that they have the talent and determination to compete for tournament titles.
