Final: Towson 3, Hampton 0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-13)

TOWSON, Md. โ€” Towson University women’s volleyball delivered one of its most efficient offensive performances of the season Thursday, October 22, defeating Hampton University in straight sets at SECU Arena. The Tigers controlled the match with aggressive attacking, disciplined defense and several impressive individual performances. Towson improved to 12-7 overall and 5-4 in Coastal Athletic Association play with the victory. Hampton fell to 2-17 overall and 0-9 in conference competition.

Anna Rice and Malinah Purcell-Telefoni led Towson’s offensive attack with 12 kills apiece, helping the Tigers establish a significant advantage at the net. Setter Kaitlyn Moran orchestrated the offense with 27 assists while collecting 14 digs for her seventh double-double of the season. Towson finished with 48 kills compared with Hampton’s 25 and recorded a .352 hitting percentage while limiting the Pirates to .099. The Tigers also dominated the blocking battle, recording eight blocks against Hampton’s two.

First Set: Towson Overcomes Early Hampton Resistance

Hampton entered Thursday’s matchup looking for its first CAA victory and initially challenged Towson during the opening set. The Pirates briefly held a 3-2 advantage before both teams traded points during the early stages. Towson eventually moved ahead 10-6, but Hampton responded behind contributions from Nikola Jaroszewicz, Racquel Frazier and Lillian Campbell. Campbell’s attack brought the Pirates within one point at 15-14, keeping the opening set competitive.

Towson responded by establishing greater control of the net and capitalizing on its offensive opportunities. The Tigers built a 22-16 advantage following a three-point run that shifted momentum decisively toward the home team. Hampton continued competing, but Towson closed the opening set with a 25-20 victory. The Tigers recorded 20 kills on 40 attacks with only five errors, producing an impressive .375 hitting percentage.

Second Set: Tigers Take Complete Control

Towson carried its offensive momentum into the second set and quickly established a commanding advantage. The Tigers scored five of the opening six points, forcing Hampton to play from behind almost immediately. Towson extended its advantage to 13-5 before the Pirates briefly responded with consecutive points. Hampton struggled to maintain offensive consistency as the Tigers continued controlling the action.

Towson followed with another strong stretch, turning a 13-7 advantage into a 19-8 lead with a 6-1 scoring run. The Tigers committed just three attacking errors in the set while recording 16 kills and hitting .361. Hampton managed only five kills and finished the frame with a negative .034 hitting percentage. Towson secured the second set 25-11, moving within one set of completing the sweep.

Third Set: Towson Finishes the Sweep

The Tigers maintained their intensity entering the third set rather than allowing Hampton an opportunity to regain momentum. Towson jumped ahead 5-1 before the Pirates responded with several successful attacks. Hampton narrowed the deficit to 9-7 behind another contribution from Jaroszewicz, briefly threatening to extend the match. However, the Tigers answered with their most decisive scoring stretch of the evening.

Towson produced a 12-2 run to transform its narrow advantage into a commanding 21-9 lead. The Tigers combined effective serving, strong blocking and efficient attacking to prevent Hampton from mounting another comeback. Towson finished the third set with 12 kills, only two attacking errors and a .313 hitting percentage. The 25-13 victory completed the three-set sweep and delivered another important conference win.

Anna Rice and Malinah Purcell-Telefoni Lead the Attack

Rice continued her productive season with another double-digit kill performance, recording 12 against the Pirates. The outing marked her 15th match with at least 10 kills through Towson’s first 19 contests. Her consistent offensive production has provided the Tigers with a dependable attacking option throughout the season. Rice also contributed a service ace and a block during Thursday’s victory.

Purcell-Telefoni matched Rice with 12 kills while making an important defensive contribution at the net. She finished with four blocks, the highest individual total recorded by either team. Clara Vorel added eight kills and three blocks, giving Towson another productive presence in the front row. Taylor Pagan contributed six kills, two blocks and a service ace to further strengthen the Tigers’ balanced performance.

Kaitlyn Moran Delivers Another Double-Double

Moran played a central role in Towson’s offensive success, finishing with 27 assists and 14 digs. Her seventh double-double of the season highlighted her ability to contribute as both a setter and defender. Moran also registered two service aces, matching Natalia PeBenito for the team lead in that category. Her all-around production helped Towson maintain its offensive rhythm throughout the match.

Peyton Meyer contributed eight assists, while Kayla Zanon added four assists and six digs. Towson’s ability to distribute the ball effectively helped create attacking opportunities for multiple players. The Tigers recorded 46 assists on their 48 kills, demonstrating the effectiveness of their offensive organization. Towson also matched Hampton with 46 digs while generating a substantially greater advantage in kills and blocks.

Hampton Struggles Against Towson’s Defense

Hampton received eight kills from Nikola Jaroszewicz, who led the Pirates offensively. Lillian Campbell and Racquel Frazier added six kills apiece, accounting for much of Hampton’s remaining production. Ana Luiza Caminha Matos recorded 18 assists and 11 digs while contributing Hampton’s only service ace. Olivia Bryant also collected 11 digs in the loss.

The Pirates remained competitive during portions of the opening set but struggled to establish consistent offensive pressure afterward. Hampton finished with 25 kills and 16 attacking errors on 91 attempts, resulting in a .099 hitting percentage. Towson limited Hampton to just five kills during the second set and nine during the third. The Tigers’ combination of effective blocking and attacking efficiency ultimately proved too much for the visitors.

What the Victory Means for Towson

The victory moved Towson above .500 in CAA competition and strengthened its position during the conference portion of the schedule. At 12-7 overall and 5-4 in league play, the Tigers demonstrated their ability to control a match against a struggling conference opponent. Their .352 hitting percentage reflected strong execution, particularly considering that Towson committed only 10 attacking errors across 108 attempts. The performance also showcased the team’s depth, with multiple contributors producing meaningful offensive and defensive statistics.

Towson entered the two-match series after a break from CAA competition that included a nonconference meeting with nearby Coppin State. Thursday’s victory provided a successful return to conference action and established momentum for the second meeting with Hampton. The Tigers had also maintained an undefeated all-time series record against the Pirates entering the week. Their latest victory reinforced that historical advantage while providing another opportunity to build confidence.

MSB Take: Towson’s Offensive Efficiency Stands Out

The most impressive aspect of Towson’s victory was not simply the straight-set result but the efficiency with which the Tigers produced it. Recording 48 kills against only 10 attacking errors demonstrates the level of offensive execution needed to compete consistently in the CAA. Rice and Purcell-Telefoni provided the scoring production, while Moran supplied the distribution and defensive effort necessary to sustain the attack. Towson also showed its ability to respond when Hampton challenged during the opening and third sets.

The next challenge for Towson is translating this level of execution against stronger conference opposition. The Tigers cannot expect every opponent to struggle offensively as much as Hampton did Thursday, making consistent serving, blocking and ball control especially important. Still, the combination of experienced contributors and multiple attacking options gives Towson a foundation for continued improvement. This was the type of convincing performance the Tigers needed as they worked to build momentum during the second half of conference play.

Next Match

At the conclusion of Thursday’s match, Towson was scheduled to face Hampton again Friday, October 23, at 2 p.m. at SECU Arena. The second meeting offered the Tigers an opportunity to complete a two-match series sweep and improve their conference record further. Hampton entered the rematch seeking its first CAA victory of the season. Thursday’s result established Towson as the stronger team in the opening meeting, particularly in attacking efficiency and net defense.
