Cubs Sign Maryland Pitcher Stinnett
Maryland pitcher Jake Stinnett agreed to a rookie contract with the Chicago Cubs today. The Cubs selected Stinnett with the 45th pick in the second round of the MLB Player Draft earlier this month. Stinnett reportedly signed for $1 million.
Stinnett was the ace of a Maryland team that was one win away from the College World Series this year. The righty pitched to a 2.67 ERA, and he had 132 strikeouts. Stinnett threw a no-hitter at the beginning of the year, and he was clutch in the postseason. The Terps won every game Stinnett started this postseason. He beat Virginia in both the ACC Tournament and NCAA Super Regionals, and he beat Old Dominion in the Columbia Regional.
The Terps will miss Stinnett next year, but Mike Shawaryn is more than ready to become the ace of the pitching staff. Shawaryn pitched to 3.12 ERA, and he set the Maryland record with 11 wins in his freshman season.
Here were my thoughts on Stinnett before the draft.
Here is the tweet from the Cubs confirming the move:
