The Navy Midshipmen men’s soccer team delivered one of its strongest offensive performances of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating the Lafayette Leopards 4-1 at Gummeson Grounds in Easton, Pennsylvania. Sophomore Yul Hong recorded his first collegiate goal and added an assist, leading Navy to its second consecutive Patriot League victory. Cohen Nance, Duncan Sullivan and Jack Illig also scored as the Midshipmen improved to 4-6-4 overall and 2-3-1 in conference competition. Goalkeeper Sam Clark made six saves as Navy extended its unbeaten streak against Lafayette to nine consecutive meetings.
Nance Gives Navy First-Half Advantage
Navy faced early pressure from Lafayette as the Leopards attempted to establish control on their home field. Clark made his first save in the third minute when Riley Martin tested the Midshipmen goalkeeper with an early attempt. Lafayette continued creating opportunities, including a dangerous second-chance shot from Samir Dishnica in the 27th minute that required another important save. Navy’s defense remained organized despite the Leopards generating several opportunities during the opening half.
The Midshipmen capitalized on their first major offensive breakthrough in the 30th minute when Hong created an opportunity along the wing. Hong carried the ball forward before firing a shot toward Lafayette goalkeeper Francisco Benbow, who stopped the initial attempt but could not secure the rebound. Nance reacted quickly and finished the loose ball into the net at the 29:24 mark, giving Navy a 1-0 advantage. The goal marked Nance’s third of the season and provided the Midshipmen with an important early lead.
Navy maintained its defensive organization throughout the remainder of the first half, preventing Lafayette from finding an equalizer. The Midshipmen demonstrated patience while defending their narrow advantage and limited the Leopards’ ability to capitalize on their attacking opportunities. Clark continued providing stability in goal, allowing Navy to maintain confidence despite facing pressure. The Midshipmen entered halftime leading 1-0 and positioned themselves to build on their advantage during the final 45 minutes.
Sullivan Extends Navy’s Lead Before Lafayette Responds
Lafayette opened the second half with renewed attacking pressure, forcing Clark into additional saves against Dishnica and Oliver Gordon. Navy weathered the early surge and quickly responded with an impressive offensive sequence that doubled its advantage. Braedy Strothkamp delivered a cross that switched the direction of play and found Sullivan moving into an attacking position. Sullivan accelerated past a defender, entered the penalty area and fired a shot beyond Benbow at the 54:57 mark to give Navy a 2-0 lead.
The goal represented Sullivan’s third of the season and demonstrated Navy’s ability to create scoring opportunities through quick transitions. Strothkamp and Luke Parker received assists on the play, highlighting the coordinated buildup that allowed Sullivan to find space behind Lafayette’s defense. Navy appeared to have established control with its two-goal advantage, but the Leopards responded almost immediately. The quick exchange of goals created an important stretch in which both teams attempted to seize momentum.
Lafayette cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 56:52 mark when Thomas Clark scored his first goal of the season. The opportunity developed after Nicolas Juliano had an initial shot blocked, allowing Lafayette to maintain possession in an attacking position. Thomas Clark then created enough space to finish the opportunity and bring the Leopards within one goal. Navy suddenly faced renewed pressure and needed to respond to prevent Lafayette from completing a comeback.
Hong Scores First Collegiate Goal to Restore Two-Goal Lead
Hong delivered the decisive response in the 63rd minute with an impressive individual effort that restored Navy’s two-goal advantage. The sophomore collected a Lafayette clearance attempt along the right side of the field and immediately attacked the Leopards’ defensive formation. Hong worked past multiple defenders before lifting a shot over Benbow’s leg and into the net at the 62:47 mark. The unassisted goal was the first of Hong’s collegiate career and extended Navy’s lead to 3-1.
The goal completed a three-point afternoon for Hong, who had already assisted on Nance’s first-half score. His performance was particularly significant because he recently transitioned into a defensive role after spending time in attacking positions earlier in his collegiate career. Hong demonstrated his versatility by contributing to Navy’s defensive organization while creating two important scoring opportunities. His ability to influence both ends of the field provided the Midshipmen with a major advantage against Lafayette.
Navy’s third goal shifted momentum back toward the Midshipmen and forced Lafayette to become more aggressive offensively. The Leopards continued generating shots, but Navy’s defenders repeatedly blocked attempts and prevented clear scoring opportunities. Clark remained composed in goal while the defensive unit protected its two-goal cushion. The Midshipmen maintained their discipline and waited for another opportunity to put the contest out of reach.
Illig Seals Victory With Fourth Navy Goal
Freshman midfielder Jack Illig completed Navy’s scoring in the 82nd minute with another well-executed attacking sequence. Junior defender Keane Brown delivered a short pass that allowed Illig to move into space and approach the Lafayette goal. Illig connected with the ball in stride and placed his shot into the upper-left corner beyond Benbow at the 81:12 mark. The goal extended Navy’s lead to 4-1 and effectively ended Lafayette’s hopes of mounting a late comeback.
Illig’s goal was his third of the season, tying him with Nance and freshman Will Smith for the team lead. The freshman has now recorded at least one point in three consecutive Patriot League matches, demonstrating his growing importance to Navy’s offensive production. His ability to contribute in critical moments has provided head coach John Hackworth with another dependable attacking option. The performance also continued an encouraging stretch for Navy’s younger players as the team attempts to improve its conference standing.
Lafayette continued attacking during the closing minutes, but Clark made two additional saves to preserve Navy’s three-goal advantage. The goalkeeper denied Roy Biegon and Nicolas Papadopoulos during the final two minutes, completing an impressive six-save performance. Clark’s total tied for the second-highest single-game save count of his collegiate career. His performance helped Navy secure a convincing road victory despite facing considerable pressure throughout the contest.
Navy Makes Most of Limited Offensive Opportunities
One of the most impressive aspects of Navy’s victory was its offensive efficiency despite Lafayette controlling several statistical categories. The Leopards finished with an 18-7 advantage in total shots and earned 12 corner kicks compared with just two for the Midshipmen. Lafayette also recorded seven shots on goal, while Navy produced six attempts on target. However, the Midshipmen converted four of their seven total shots into goals, demonstrating outstanding finishing ability.
Navy’s four goals represented its highest single-game scoring total since its 4-3 victory over Army on October 9. The Midshipmen have now scored four goals in two of their last three Patriot League matches, showing improvement after struggling offensively during portions of September. The team’s ability to capitalize on limited opportunities against Lafayette provided an encouraging sign as postseason competition approaches. Navy will need to maintain that finishing efficiency while continuing to improve its ability to control possession and limit opposing chances.
The Midshipmen also received important contributions from multiple players, with four different athletes scoring goals and several others recording assists. Hong led the team with three points, while Nance, Sullivan and Illig each contributed goals at important moments. Strothkamp, Parker and Brown provided additional offensive support through their assists. The balanced scoring effort demonstrated Navy’s ability to create opportunities from different positions and attacking combinations.
Hong and Illig Earn Patriot League Weekly Honors
Navy’s performance against Lafayette received additional recognition Monday when the Patriot League announced its weekly men’s soccer awards. Hong earned Patriot League Defender of the Week honors following his three-point performance and strong contribution after transitioning to the backline. Illig received Patriot League Rookie of the Week recognition after scoring his third goal of the season and playing all 90 minutes against Lafayette. The awards represented the first weekly conference honors of both players’ collegiate careers.
The recognition continued a strong stretch for Navy, which also claimed the same two conference awards the previous week. Brown received Defender of the Week honors following Navy’s victory over Army, while Smith earned Rookie of the Week recognition. Navy has now secured consecutive weekly awards in both categories, reflecting the contributions of several younger players during the team’s recent conference success. The individual recognition provides another encouraging sign as the Midshipmen attempt to strengthen their postseason position.
Nance also received honorable mention recognition from the Patriot League following his third goal of the season against Lafayette. The freshman has emerged as another important contributor to Navy’s attacking unit and continues developing alongside Illig and Smith. Their performances have provided the Midshipmen with a promising group of younger players capable of influencing important conference matches. Maintaining those contributions will be essential as Navy approaches the final weeks of its regular-season schedule.
Victory Extends Navy’s Dominance Over Lafayette
Saturday’s victory improved Navy’s all-time record against Lafayette to 28-17-6 and extended the Midshipmen’s unbeaten streak in the series to nine consecutive matches. Navy has not lost to the Leopards since 2017 and has won its last six road meetings at Gummeson Grounds. The Midshipmen improved to 10-5-1 all-time when visiting Lafayette, continuing their strong history at the venue. The latest victory carried additional significance because Lafayette entered the contest as the defending Patriot League champion.
Navy’s victory also provided an important boost to its conference record after a difficult opening stretch of league competition. The Midshipmen had struggled to secure victories earlier in the season but have now defeated Army and Lafayette in consecutive Patriot League matches. Those results have strengthened Navy’s position in the conference standings and provided renewed momentum. The Midshipmen will look to build on that progress as they continue pursuing a place in the Patriot League Tournament.
Loyola Visits Annapolis for Senior Night
Navy will return home Saturday, October 24, to host Loyola Maryland at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility in Annapolis. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. as the Midshipmen celebrate Senior Night and attempt to extend their conference winning streak to three matches. The contest will provide another important opportunity to improve Navy’s Patriot League record. With only a few regular-season matches remaining, every conference result carries additional significance.
The Midshipmen will then travel to Bucknell on October 30 before concluding the regular season against American on November 3. Navy’s remaining schedule features several opponents competing for postseason positioning, creating important opportunities for the team to strengthen its standing. Hackworth will look for his players to maintain the offensive efficiency and defensive composure they demonstrated against Lafayette. Continued improvement could allow Navy to enter the conference tournament with considerable momentum.
MSB Take
Navy’s 4-1 victory over Lafayette was one of the Midshipmen’s most encouraging performances of the season, particularly considering the importance of securing consecutive Patriot League victories. Hong delivered an outstanding individual effort, contributing directly to two goals while continuing to adjust to his defensive responsibilities. The sophomore’s first collegiate goal was especially impressive because of his ability to create the opportunity through individual skill and determination. Navy also benefited from balanced scoring, with Nance, Sullivan and Illig demonstrating that the Midshipmen have several players capable of finishing scoring chances.
The biggest concern remains Navy’s ability to limit opposing offensive opportunities, as Lafayette finished with 18 shots and 12 corner kicks. Clark deserves considerable credit for making six saves and preventing the Leopards from converting their attacking pressure into additional goals. The Midshipmen cannot consistently rely on converting four of seven shots to overcome significant statistical disadvantages against stronger opponents. Improving possession, defensive organization and the ability to control the tempo will become increasingly important as the postseason approaches.
Nevertheless, Navy has demonstrated meaningful improvement during its recent Patriot League performances and appears to be developing confidence at an important point in the season. Consecutive victories over Army and Lafayette have given the Midshipmen renewed momentum, while the emergence of younger contributors provides reasons for optimism beyond the current campaign. Hong and Illig’s weekly conference honors further demonstrate the progress taking place throughout the roster. If Navy can combine its improving offensive efficiency with stronger defensive consistency, the Midshipmen have an opportunity to make a meaningful push during the final weeks of Patriot League competition.
