Washington Wizards Look to Continue Preseason Momentum Against Brooklyn Nets

By Brian Hradsky Maryland Sports Blog | October 12, 2026
The Washington Wizards return to Capital One Arena on Monday night for a preseason matchup against the Brooklyn Nets, looking to build on a promising stretch of exhibition basketball. Washington enters the contest following a 114-108 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Saturday and a 111-109 road victory against the New York Knicks on Thursday. Although preseason results do not count toward the regular-season standings, the victories offer an encouraging opportunity for Washington’s young roster to develop confidence. The Wizards will look to maintain that momentum against a Brooklyn team that is also evaluating its personnel ahead of the regular season.

Wizards Looking to Build Chemistry Around New-Look Roster
Washington’s offseason transformation has created considerable excitement surrounding the franchise, particularly with the additions of veteran stars Trae Young and Anthony Davis alongside No. 1 overall draft pick AJ Dybantsa. The Wizards are attempting to establish a competitive foundation while developing younger players such as Kyshawn George and Alex Sarr. Monday’s contest provides another opportunity for head coach Brian Keefe to evaluate how the team’s veterans and young prospects perform together. With the regular season approaching, developing chemistry and establishing consistent offensive execution will be more important than simply maintaining an undefeated preseason record.
Dybantsa has already provided glimpses of the athleticism and versatility that made him the top selection in the 2026 NBA Draft. His ability to attack in transition and contribute defensively has stood out during Washington’s first two exhibition games, although his perimeter shooting remains a work in progress. Dybantsa enters Monday having missed all five of his three-point attempts while converting six of 13 free throws. The Wizards will look for continued improvement in his offensive decision-making and shooting efficiency as he adjusts to the NBA.
Washington Coming Off Overtime Victory Against Detroit
Washington’s most recent victory came Saturday against the Pistons, when the Wizards needed overtime to secure a 114-108 win at Capital One Arena. Rookie Will Riley led Washington with 15 points, four rebounds and three assists while converting all eight of his free-throw attempts. Davis contributed 10 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two blocks in 22 minutes, while Young finished with eight assists. The Wizards also received valuable contributions from their reserves, demonstrating the importance of depth during preseason competition.
Washington opened that contest with an impressive 40-point first quarter but struggled to maintain its offensive rhythm throughout the remainder of regulation. Detroit gradually erased the deficit and forced overtime before the Wizards outscored the Pistons 16-10 in the extra period. The game highlighted both Washington’s offensive potential and its need for improved consistency, particularly when protecting leads. Monday’s matchup against Brooklyn offers another opportunity to address those weaknesses while continuing to experiment with rotations.
Brooklyn Nets Enter With Unbeaten Preseason Record
Brooklyn also enters Monday’s contest with a 2-0 preseason record after recording victories over the Philadelphia 76ers and Charlotte Hornets. The Nets are evaluating a revamped roster featuring Julius Randle, Michael Porter Jr., Egor Demin and several developing young players. Like Washington, Brooklyn is using the preseason to determine which combinations can provide reliable scoring, defensive versatility and consistency. The Nets will attempt to continue their strong exhibition start while testing Washington’s developing defensive chemistry.
The Nets could face additional challenges because of injuries involving several rotation players. Porter has been listed as questionable with a wrist issue, while Day’Ron Sharpe is dealing with a shoulder problem and Mikel Brown Jr. has an ankle injury. Their availability could affect Brooklyn’s rotations and create additional playing opportunities for younger players. Washington must be prepared for different lineup combinations as both coaching staffs continue evaluating their rosters.

Three Keys to Victory for Washington
1. Establish offensive chemistry. Washington needs Young to continue developing connections with Davis, Dybantsa and George. His passing ability should help create high-percentage opportunities while allowing the Wizards to evaluate their half-court offense.
2. Improve defensive consistency. The Wizards must communicate effectively, protect the paint and avoid allowing Brooklyn to generate uncontested perimeter opportunities. Washington also needs to limit turnovers after committing 27 against Detroit.
3. Continue developing young players. Dybantsa, Riley and Washington’s other prospects need meaningful minutes against NBA competition. Their performances could influence rotation decisions as the regular season approaches.
Players to Watch
AJ Dybantsa โ Washington Wizards
Washington’s prized rookie has shown promise as a transition scorer and active defender. His shooting development and growing chemistry with the veterans will be worth watching.
Trae Young โ Washington Wizards
Young’s playmaking remains central to Washington’s offensive plans. His eight assists against Detroit demonstrated his ability to create opportunities for teammates.
Egor Demin โ Brooklyn Nets
Demin represents an important piece of Brooklyn’s young core. His size and passing ability from the backcourt could challenge Washington’s perimeter defenders.
MSB Take
The Wizards have given their fans legitimate reasons for optimism through the opening two games of the preseason, but Monday’s matchup will provide another important test for their revamped roster. Young and Davis bring veteran experience to a franchise that has spent several seasons rebuilding, while Dybantsa offers the type of long-term potential that could change Washington’s future. The most important objective should be establishing chemistry between those players rather than focusing exclusively on the final score. Washington has enough offensive talent to create problems for opponents, but the team must become more disciplined defensively and improve its overall consistency.
Dybantsa’s development will be particularly interesting to follow because Washington has an opportunity to build around one of basketball’s most promising young players. His early shooting struggles should not overshadow the athleticism, defensive effort and scoring potential he has already demonstrated. If Young can help create easier opportunities for Dybantsa while Davis provides a reliable interior presence, Washington could become considerably more competitive this season. A third consecutive preseason victory would be encouraging, but continued improvement from the young roster would be the more meaningful result.
