1-0 preseason

Capital One Arena · Washington, D.C. · Monumental Sports Network

The Washington Wizards will look to build on an encouraging preseason opener when they host the Detroit Pistons on Saturday night at Capital One Arena. Washington enters the matchup following a 111-109 victory over the New York Knicks on Thursday, while Detroit opened its preseason with a 109-107 win against the Phoenix Suns. Both teams are beginning a new campaign with considerable expectations, although they enter the season at different stages of development. For the Wizards, Saturday presents another opportunity to evaluate a dramatically improved roster and establish chemistry before the regular season begins.

Washington’s New-Look Roster Shows Promise

The Wizards delivered an encouraging performance against New York, overcoming a six-point halftime deficit to secure their first preseason victory. Anthony Davis led Washington with 16 points, while Trae Young contributed 15 and rookie AJ Dybantsa finished with 11. Will Riley provided an important fourth-quarter basket that helped Washington seize control during its comeback. Although preseason results carry limited significance, the victory offered an early glimpse of the offensive potential Washington hopes to develop this season.

The addition of Young gives Washington an experienced offensive organizer capable of creating scoring opportunities for teammates and stretching defenses with his shooting range. Davis provides a proven interior scoring threat and defensive presence, while Dybantsa brings exceptional athleticism and versatility as the first overall selection in the 2026 NBA Draft. Their combination could significantly improve an offense that struggled throughout last season, when Washington finished with a 17-65 record. The challenge for head coach Brian Keefe will be establishing a rotation that allows his veterans and developing players to complement one another.

Detroit Presents a Difficult Challenge

The Pistons arrive in Washington with a talented roster led by Cade Cunningham, who remains the centerpiece of Detroit’s offensive attack. Cunningham’s ability to create shots, distribute the basketball and control the tempo makes him a difficult assignment for any opposing defense. Detroit has also added shooting and frontcourt versatility through players such as Duncan Robinson, Isaiah Joe and John Collins. Those additions should provide more spacing around Cunningham and center Jalen Duren as the Pistons attempt to build on their recent postseason success.

Detroit’s preseason opener against Phoenix demonstrated the team’s defensive potential, particularly through the play of Ronald Holland II. Holland recorded 14 points, five steals and two blocks, making an impact on both ends of the floor. Ausar Thompson also gives Detroit an athletic perimeter defender capable of disrupting passing lanes and challenging opposing scorers. Washington must protect the basketball and avoid allowing Detroit to turn defensive pressure into transition opportunities.

Key Matchups to Watch

Trae Young vs. Cade Cunningham: The matchup between the two lead guards could determine which team controls the offensive tempo. Young will attempt to create opportunities through his passing and perimeter shooting, while Cunningham can use his size and playmaking ability to attack Washington’s defense. Both players can dictate the pace when given room to operate, making defensive communication especially important. Their playing time may be limited because this is a preseason contest, but their minutes together should provide an interesting early test.

Anthony Davis and Washington’s frontcourt vs. Detroit’s interior defense: Davis gives the Wizards an experienced scorer who can operate around the basket or step away from the paint. Detroit will look to Duren and its other frontcourt players to contest shots, secure rebounds and prevent second-chance opportunities. Washington’s ability to establish an inside presence could open perimeter opportunities for Young, Dybantsa and the rest of the offense. If Alex Sarr returns, Keefe will have another opportunity to experiment with combinations featuring multiple talented big men.

AJ Dybantsa vs. Detroit’s athletic wings: Dybantsa showed flashes of his offensive ability during Washington’s victory over New York, finishing with 11 points and contributing as a passer. Detroit’s collection of athletic defenders should provide another valuable challenge for the rookie as he adjusts to NBA competition. Dybantsa will need to remain aggressive while recognizing when to attack and when to move the basketball. His continued development could become one of Washington’s most important storylines throughout the season.

Injury Updates

Washington will be without Jamir Watkins and Tristan Vukcevic, while Sarr and Khris Middleton have been listed as day-to-day. Keefe indicated Friday that Sarr was trending toward a return against Detroit, although his availability had not been finalized. Middleton is also progressing toward a return as Washington continues evaluating its rotation. Detroit center Jalen Duren has been listed as day-to-day for rest purposes, with his availability worth monitoring before tipoff.

Three Keys to a Wizards Victory

Washington must first limit turnovers against a Detroit defense capable of creating easy scoring opportunities through steals and transition play. The Wizards committed 22 turnovers against New York, a number that could prove costly against Cunningham, Thompson and Holland. Improving ball security will allow Washington to establish its half-court offense and make better use of its new scoring options. Young’s leadership and decision-making should play an important role in addressing that issue.

The Wizards must also compete on the glass and prevent Detroit from controlling the interior. Washington collected 53 rebounds against New York, but the Pistons present a different physical challenge with their athletic frontcourt. Davis, Deandre Ayton and potentially Sarr will be important in establishing rebounding position and limiting second-chance opportunities. Strong rebounding could also help Washington generate transition scoring chances before Detroit establishes its defense.

Finally, Washington needs another productive performance from its younger players and reserves. Riley, Bub Carrington and Justin Champagnie have opportunities to strengthen their cases for significant playing time during the preseason. Keefe is still evaluating several rotation combinations, making these exhibition games important beyond the final score. Continued contributions from Washington’s bench could ultimately determine whether the Wizards have enough depth to compete consistently during the regular season.

MSB projected score — not an actual result

Detroit enters as the more established team and should present a difficult test for Washington’s developing chemistry. However, the Wizards have enough offensive talent to remain competitive, particularly if Young and Davis continue building on their performances against New York. The outcome could ultimately depend on which team’s reserves perform better during the second half, when preseason rotations typically become more experimental. Detroit receives a slight edge because of its defensive versatility and established core, but another competitive Washington performance would represent meaningful progress.

MSB Take

The Wizards finally have a roster that gives fans legitimate reasons for excitement after several difficult seasons. Adding Young and Davis alongside a promising young talent like Dybantsa creates a much more interesting foundation, although the organization still needs to prove that its pieces can function together consistently. Washington’s victory over New York was an encouraging beginning, but Saturday’s matchup against Detroit should provide another indication of how far this group has progressed. The most important development will not necessarily be another preseason victory, but whether the Wizards continue showing improved defensive effort, offensive chemistry and confidence against quality competition.
