Final: Morgan State 3, South Carolina State 2

The Morgan State Bears volleyball team battled back from a two-set deficit in the match score to defeat the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs, 3-2, on Sunday, October 4, at Dukes Gymnasium in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Morgan State prevailed by scores of 23-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-18 and 15-13 in a tightly contested Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matchup. The victory snapped a two-match losing streak and improved the Bears to 3-13 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

The Bears demonstrated resilience throughout the afternoon, twice recovering from a one-set deficit to keep their hopes alive. After dropping the opening set, Morgan State responded with a convincing second-set victory before South Carolina State regained control in the third. Morgan State refused to surrender, winning the fourth set and setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

Morgan State Delivers When It Matters Most

The decisive fifth set provided the biggest moment of the afternoon as South Carolina State moved within two points of securing the victory. Trailing 13-12, Morgan State called a timeout and responded with three consecutive points to complete the comeback. Tre’Niya Miller delivered a crucial kill before Nathalia Ferreira Morais followed with a service ace that gave the Bears a 14-13 advantage. Miller then combined with a teammate on the match-winning block to seal the 15-13 victory.

Morgan State’s ability to execute under pressure proved to be the difference in a match that featured several momentum swings. The Bears faced elimination late in the fifth set but responded with their strongest sequence of the afternoon. Their performance in the final moments demonstrated the importance of timely offensive execution and defensive positioning. The comeback also gave Morgan State a much-needed conference victory following consecutive defeats.

Panekova Leads Morgan State Offense

Michaela Panekova led the Bears offensively with a match-high 12 kills, providing a consistent attacking presence throughout the five-set contest. Jada Williams contributed eight kills, while Zayda Thomas added six and Aubrey Wilson finished with four. The balanced offensive production helped Morgan State remain competitive despite South Carolina State taking two of the first three sets.

Sophomore setter Isabelle Brown played an important role in directing the offense, recording 25 assists and three service aces. Brown entered the contest having recently reached 1,000 career assists during Morgan State’s five-set loss to North Carolina Central on October 2. She became the 11th player in program history to reach that milestone, adding another accomplishment to her developing collegiate career. Her ability to distribute the ball remained an important part of Morgan State’s offensive success against the Lady Bulldogs.

Defensively, Tameary Wardlaw led Morgan State with 12 digs, while Williams and Bailey Swinton contributed eight apiece. Morais added seven digs and three service aces, including the critical ace during the final-set comeback. Chloe Scott contributed four blocks and three aces, helping the Bears generate points through both their defensive effort and serving. Those contributions gave Morgan State several ways to influence the match beyond its attacking production.

Bears Gain Ground in MEAC Play

The victory carried significance for Morgan State as the Bears worked to establish consistency during conference competition. Morgan State entered the matchup following a narrow five-set defeat against North Carolina Central on October 2, making Sunday’s result an important response to another difficult road contest. The Bears improved to .500 in MEAC competition despite their challenging overall record, keeping themselves competitive in the early conference standings.

South Carolina State, meanwhile, fell to 4-15 overall and remained winless in conference play at 0-4. The Lady Bulldogs pushed Morgan State to the limit and appeared positioned to secure their first MEAC victory of the season before the late fifth-set rally. Their inability to close out the contest extended their struggles against conference opponents. Morgan State capitalized on the opportunity and returned to Baltimore with a valuable road victory.

Looking Ahead

Following the victory, Morgan State prepared to return to Hill Field House for its annual Pink Match and Homecoming contest against Delaware State on Friday, October 9. The matchup was scheduled for 6 p.m. with coverage on the MEAC Network. Delaware State entered that week with a 12-6 overall record and a 3-1 conference mark, presenting a difficult challenge for the Bears. The South Carolina State victory provided Morgan State with positive momentum heading into that matchup.

MSB Take

Morgan State’s five-set victory over South Carolina State was not just another conference win, but an example of the resilience this young team needs to develop. The Bears have struggled to put together consistent performances this season, but responding to a 13-12 deficit in the deciding set demonstrated their ability to handle pressure. Panekova’s offensive production, Brown’s playmaking and the team’s timely defensive contributions provided a formula Morgan State can build upon. Although the overall record remains disappointing, victories like this can help establish confidence during the conference schedule.

The biggest challenge moving forward will be turning those individual moments of success into complete match performances. Morgan State cannot consistently rely on late comebacks against stronger conference opponents, particularly when facing teams capable of maintaining pressure throughout five sets. However, the Bears showed they have the determination and talent to compete when their execution improves. If Morgan State can build on this victory and develop greater consistency, the team could become a more difficult opponent as MEAC play progresses.
