Maryland Terrapins Face Massive Challenge Against No. 5 Ohio State as Pressure Mounts on Mike Locksley

By Brian Hradsky | Maryland Sports Blog | October 9, 2026

The Maryland Terrapins face arguably their toughest challenge of the 2026 college football season Saturday afternoon when they travel to Columbus to face the fifth-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. Maryland enters the contest with a disappointing 2-3 record, including three consecutive losses that have raised serious questions about the direction of the program under head coach Mike Locksley. Ohio State, meanwhile, enters at 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Big Ten play, looking to strengthen its College Football Playoff résumé. For Maryland, Saturday represents an opportunity to demonstrate that the program can compete against the conference’s elite rather than suffer another embarrassing defeat.

Maryland’s Season Has Quickly Fallen Apart

Maryland opened the season with considerable optimism after defeating Hampton 62-0 and Connecticut 38-14. The Terrapins appeared capable of producing another winning season, particularly with talented young quarterback Malik Washington leading the offense. However, the optimism disappeared when Maryland suffered a 35-26 defeat against Virginia Tech before being humiliated 54-3 by UCLA at SECU Stadium. Last weekend’s 48-23 loss to Nebraska extended the losing streak to three games and exposed additional weaknesses on both sides of the football.

The most troubling development has been Maryland’s inability to remain competitive against quality opponents for four quarters. Against Nebraska, the Terrapins actually built a 23-14 lead during the first half before the Cornhuskers scored 34 unanswered points. Maryland generated 395 yards of total offense but struggled to sustain drives, converting only one third down throughout the game. The collapse demonstrated that the Terrapins have enough talent to challenge opponents early but lack the consistency and execution necessary to finish games.

Maryland’s recent defensive performances have been particularly alarming, with opponents scoring 137 combined points during the three-game losing streak. The Terrapins have struggled against both the run and the pass, while penalties and turnovers have repeatedly placed the defense in difficult situations. Those mistakes become considerably more damaging against a program like Ohio State, which possesses the offensive talent to turn short fields into touchdowns. Unless Maryland improves dramatically, Saturday could become another difficult afternoon for Locksley and his coaching staff.

Malik Washington Must Eliminate Costly Turnovers

Washington remains one of Maryland’s most important players and represents a significant part of the program’s future. Through five games, he has completed 62.9% of his passes for 1,288 yards, seven touchdowns and six interceptions. His arm strength and ability to extend plays give Maryland an opportunity to generate explosive offensive possessions, particularly when the offensive line provides adequate protection. However, his recent turnover problems have contributed to Maryland’s struggles against stronger competition.

Washington threw six interceptions across Maryland’s previous two games, a concerning development heading into a matchup against one of the country’s strongest defenses. Ohio State has the speed and athleticism to capitalize on poor decisions, especially when quarterbacks attempt dangerous throws under pressure. Maryland must establish manageable third-down situations and avoid forcing Washington to carry the entire offense through the air. A more balanced offensive approach would help protect its young quarterback while giving the Terrapins a better opportunity to control possession.

The sophomore also needs assistance from Maryland’s offensive line, which faces a difficult assignment against Ohio State’s defensive front. The Buckeyes allow only 267 total yards and 12.6 points per game, demonstrating their ability to disrupt opposing offenses. Washington cannot afford to hold the football too long or repeatedly attempt to escape pressure without a clear passing option. Maryland’s best opportunity will involve quick completions, effective rushing plays and a commitment to protecting the football.

Chris Durr Jr. Gives Maryland a Legitimate Offensive Weapon

One of the few consistent bright spots during Maryland’s disappointing start has been wide receiver Chris Durr Jr. The Wyoming transfer has developed into Washington’s most dependable target, recording 42 receptions for 461 yards and four touchdowns through five games. His production earned him recognition on the Biletnikoff Award Watch List, which honors the nation’s outstanding receiver. Durr has demonstrated the ability to create separation, make difficult catches and turn routine completions into explosive gains.

Durr delivered one of Maryland’s biggest offensive highlights against Nebraska when he caught a 65-yard touchdown pass from Washington. His ability to stretch the field could provide the Terrapins with opportunities against an aggressive Ohio State defense. The Buckeyes have outstanding defensive talent, but sophomore cornerback Devin Sanchez has experienced some difficulties in coverage, including multiple pass-interference penalties in recent games. Maryland should look for opportunities to challenge Sanchez without becoming overly dependent on deep passing attempts.

Durr cannot carry the passing game alone, and Maryland must receive contributions from its other receivers and tight ends. Ohio State will undoubtedly recognize his importance and could devote additional coverage toward limiting his production. Washington must identify favorable matchups and distribute the football effectively rather than repeatedly forcing passes toward his favorite target. If Maryland can establish several legitimate receiving threats, the Terrapins might find opportunities to sustain drives and keep Ohio State’s offense off the field.

Ohio State’s Offense Presents a Nightmare Matchup

Ohio State enters Saturday with one of the most explosive offenses in college football, averaging 514.4 total yards and 42.2 points per game. The Buckeyes rank second nationally in passing offense at 357 yards per contest, presenting an enormous challenge for a Maryland defense that has struggled throughout its losing streak. Quarterback Julian Sayin has been outstanding, throwing for 1,530 yards, 13 touchdowns and only one interception while completing 72.5% of his passes. His efficiency allows Ohio State to maintain offensive balance while consistently creating scoring opportunities.

Sayin’s most dangerous weapon is wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, one of the country’s premier offensive players and a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate. Smith enters Saturday with 44 receptions for 823 yards and nine touchdowns, numbers that demonstrate his ability to dominate opposing secondaries. He recorded 11 catches for 206 yards and two touchdowns during Ohio State’s 31-14 victory over Iowa last weekend. Over his previous two games, Smith accumulated 423 receiving yards and six touchdowns, making him an especially concerning matchup for Maryland’s defensive backs.

The Buckeyes also feature running back Bo Jackson, who has rushed for 353 yards on 66 carries while scoring twice. Although Ohio State’s passing attack receives most of the attention, Jackson gives the offense another dimension that prevents opponents from concentrating exclusively on Smith. Maryland must respect the running game without sacrificing too much coverage against Ohio State’s receivers. That balance will be extremely difficult to maintain, particularly if the Terrapins fall behind early and begin taking additional defensive risks.

Maryland’s Defense Cannot Allow Jeremiah Smith to Take Over

Containing Smith should be Maryland’s primary defensive objective, although completely shutting down the Ohio State star appears unrealistic. The Terrapins have allowed 198.4 passing yards per game this season and have held opponents below 250 passing yards in eight consecutive road contests. Those statistics suggest Maryland has occasionally defended the pass effectively despite its overall defensive struggles. However, Ohio State’s receiving talent represents a much more difficult challenge than most opponents Maryland has faced.

Maryland needs to keep Smith in front of its secondary and prevent the explosive plays that can quickly turn a competitive game into a blowout. Defensive backs must communicate effectively, maintain proper positioning and receive help from safeties when necessary. The Terrapins also need to generate pressure on Sayin without repeatedly exposing themselves to one-on-one coverage against Smith. If the Buckeyes consistently have time to develop deep passing routes, Maryland could find itself facing another overwhelming offensive performance.

The Terrapins’ defensive front must also improve against the run to prevent Ohio State from controlling the tempo. Maryland allows 136.6 rushing yards per game, a respectable figure that has not translated into enough defensive stops. The Buckeyes can exploit defensive hesitation by alternating between Jackson’s rushing opportunities and Sayin’s passing attack. Maryland needs its linebackers and defensive linemen to win individual matchups while maintaining the discipline necessary to defend multiple offensive threats.

The statistical differences demonstrate why Ohio State enters as such a significant favorite. The Buckeyes average nearly 12 more points per game while allowing approximately 18 fewer points than Maryland. Ohio State also possesses a substantial advantage in offensive yardage and defensive efficiency, creating a difficult matchup for a Maryland program struggling to find consistency. The Terrapins must outperform their season averages in several categories simply to remain competitive into the second half.

History Has Not Been Kind to Maryland

Maryland has never defeated Ohio State in football, entering Saturday with an 0-9 record against the Buckeyes. The programs have produced several memorable contests, including Maryland’s heartbreaking 52-51 overtime defeat in 2018. However, most meetings have ended with Ohio State demonstrating its superior depth, speed and overall talent. The Buckeyes have scored at least 60 points against Maryland four times, illustrating how quickly this matchup can become one-sided.

The Terrapins also face a troubling historical trend against nationally ranked Big Ten opponents. Since joining the conference in 2014, Maryland has gone 0-39 against ranked Big Ten teams, with 18 of those defeats occurring during Locksley’s tenure. Those numbers highlight the considerable gap that continues to separate Maryland from the conference’s most successful programs. Saturday offers another opportunity to challenge that history, although the circumstances make an upset extremely unlikely.

Injury Concerns Heading Into Saturday

Ohio State enters the matchup with questions surrounding several offensive contributors. Wide receivers Brandon Inniss and Devin McCuin, along with offensive tackle Philip Daniels, were listed as questionable on the Buckeyes’ midweek availability report. Their potential absences could affect Ohio State’s offensive rotation, although the Buckeyes possess enough depth to remain dangerous. Final availability will be important to monitor before kickoff.

Maryland also has injury concerns, with running back DeJuan Williams, tight end Preston Howard and kicker Daniel Leahy appearing on recent availability updates. Those players were subsequently listed as probable in reports dated October 8, although their final status remains subject to change. Williams could be particularly important if Maryland hopes to establish a more effective rushing attack against Ohio State’s defense. The Terrapins cannot afford to enter this matchup without key contributors, especially given the significant talent disadvantage they already face.

Four Keys to Maryland Pulling Off an Upset

1. Protect the football. Washington must avoid interceptions and give Maryland opportunities to finish drives rather than handing Ohio State additional possessions.

2. Limit Jeremiah Smith’s explosive plays. Maryland needs disciplined coverage and cannot allow Smith to repeatedly get behind the secondary.

3. Improve third-down execution. Maryland converted just one third down against Nebraska, and those offensive struggles would be disastrous against Ohio State.

4. Keep the game competitive into the fourth quarter. Maryland cannot afford another second-half collapse after demonstrating against Nebraska that it can build an early lead.

Prediction: Ohio State 49, Maryland 13

Ohio State enters Saturday with overwhelming advantages in talent, depth, offensive production and defensive consistency. The Buckeyes have one of the nation’s most dangerous quarterback-receiver combinations in Sayin and Smith, while Maryland has struggled to prevent explosive plays during its three-game losing streak. Washington and Durr should provide Maryland with opportunities to generate some offensive production, but consistently moving the football against Ohio State’s defense will be extremely difficult. Unless the Terrapins force multiple turnovers and capitalize on nearly every scoring opportunity, the Buckeyes should control the matchup.

Maryland might remain competitive during the opening quarter if Washington avoids mistakes and the defense prevents early explosive plays. However, Ohio State’s offensive depth and ability to score quickly could overwhelm the Terrapins as the afternoon progresses. Smith should have opportunities to produce another strong receiving performance, while Sayin’s efficiency will test Maryland’s secondary throughout the contest. A 49-13 Ohio State victory would represent another disappointing result for Maryland and further intensify the scrutiny surrounding Locksley’s future.

MSB Take: Maryland’s Problems Go Beyond One Difficult Matchup

Maryland losing to Ohio State would not be surprising, but the manner in which the Terrapins compete Saturday should matter considerably when evaluating the program. Locksley has had multiple seasons to establish Maryland as a competitive Big Ten team, yet the program continues to struggle against quality conference opponents. The 54-3 humiliation against UCLA and the second-half collapse against Nebraska were unacceptable performances for a program that should be making progress. Maryland fans have every right to question whether the current coaching staff can take the Terrapins beyond occasional victories against weaker opponents.

The most frustrating part of Maryland’s season is that the roster has enough talent to be more competitive than its recent performances suggest. Washington is a promising young quarterback, Durr has developed into an excellent receiver, and the offense has demonstrated the ability to produce explosive plays. However, inconsistent execution, defensive breakdowns and repeated mistakes have prevented those individual performances from translating into victories. Those problems ultimately fall on the coaching staff, which must demonstrate that it can prepare the team to compete for four quarters.

Maryland should not expect to defeat a national championship contender every season, but it should expect to avoid being embarrassed on a regular basis. If Ohio State delivers another lopsided defeat, the conversation surrounding Locksley’s job security will only become louder. The Terrapins need a clear direction, improved player development and a coaching philosophy capable of producing consistent results against Big Ten competition. Saturday might not determine Locksley’s future by itself, but another noncompetitive performance would strengthen the argument that Maryland needs a change in leadership.
