Towson Tigers Look for First Victory of 2026 Against Stony Brook on Family Weekend

By Brian Hradsky | Maryland Sports Blog | October 9, 2026

The Towson Tigers return to Johnny Unitas Stadium on Saturday afternoon looking to accomplish something that has eluded them through six games: earn their first victory of the 2026 college football season. Towson will host the Stony Brook Seawolves in a Coastal Athletic Association matchup that carries significant implications for both programs. The Tigers enter at 0-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play, while Stony Brook brings a 3-2 record and a 1-0 conference mark into the contest. With Towson coming off a heartbreaking 41-40 loss to Monmouth, Saturday presents another opportunity for head coach Pete Shinnick and his team to turn competitive performances into victories.

Towson Searching for Answers After Another Close Loss

Towson’s record does not completely reflect how competitive the Tigers have been in several games this season. Three of the team’s six defeats have come by one score, including last weekend’s devastating 41-40 loss at Monmouth. The Tigers produced their strongest offensive performance of the season, scoring 40 points and generating 375 yards of total offense against one of the conference’s better teams. However, another missed opportunity left Towson searching for its first victory heading into the second weekend of October.

Quarterback Andrew Indorf delivered one of his best performances of the season against Monmouth, completing 21 of 35 passes for four touchdowns and one interception. Towson scored on all six of its red-zone opportunities and nearly forced overtime after Cleveland Charlton caught a touchdown pass with 1:41 remaining. A penalty pushed the ensuing extra-point attempt back to 35 yards, and the kick missed, allowing Monmouth to escape with the victory. Despite the disappointing result, the offensive production demonstrated that Towson has enough talent to compete against conference opponents.

Andrew Indorf Has Become the Centerpiece of Towson’s Offense

Indorf has established himself as one of the CAA’s most productive quarterbacks through the first six games of the season. He enters Saturday with 1,542 passing yards and a conference-leading 15 touchdown passes, averaging 257 passing yards per contest. His ability to distribute the football and stretch defenses has helped Towson remain competitive even when its defense has struggled. The Tigers will need another strong performance from their quarterback against a Stony Brook defense featuring one of the nation’s most disruptive pass rushers.

Wide receiver Aaron Enterline has emerged as one of Indorf’s favorite targets and a consistent scoring threat. Enterline has caught a touchdown pass in all six games this season and already has eight receiving touchdowns, tying him for ninth in Towson single-season history. His performance against Monmouth included Towson’s first 150-yard receiving game since 2019, highlighting his importance to the passing attack. Establishing a productive connection between Indorf and Enterline will be one of Towson’s best opportunities to challenge the Seawolves’ defense.

Stony Brook Arrives With One of the CAA’s Most Dangerous Offenses

Stony Brook enters Saturday’s contest with considerable momentum after winning its previous two games and enjoying a bye week. The Seawolves defeated Fordham 31-16 on September 26, improving to 3-2 overall and extending their winning streak. Head coach Billy Cosh has built a program capable of competing for conference victories, and Stony Brook is receiving votes in both major FCS national polls. The Seawolves also enter with the CAA’s highest-scoring offense, averaging 34.8 points per game.

Running back CJ Hester has been particularly dangerous, giving the Seawolves a dependable rushing attack capable of controlling possession and finishing drives. Hester has rushed for 483 yards on 88 carries and leads the conference with 10 rushing touchdowns. He delivered 135 rushing yards and three touchdowns against Fordham, showing his ability to carry the offense when necessary. Stony Brook averages 185.6 rushing yards per game, making stopping Hester one of Towson’s most important defensive assignments.

Quarterback Quinn Boyd provides Stony Brook with balance through the passing game, completing 66.9% of his attempts for 1,198 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions. Boyd completed 20 of 26 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown against Fordham, demonstrating the efficiency that makes the Seawolves difficult to defend. Towson cannot afford to focus exclusively on the running game because Boyd has shown he can capitalize when defenses commit additional defenders near the line of scrimmage. If the Seawolves establish their running attack early, they could create favorable passing situations throughout the afternoon.

Khalid Bueno Presents a Major Challenge for Towson

Perhaps the most important individual matchup Saturday will involve Towson’s offensive line and Stony Brook defensive lineman Khalid Bueno. The redshirt freshman leads the FCS with 7.5 sacks and has recorded 11.5 tackles for loss through five games. Bueno has registered at least two tackles for loss in four contests, establishing himself as one of the most disruptive defensive players in the country. His ability to pressure quarterbacks could significantly influence Towson’s offensive strategy.

Towson must prevent Bueno from consistently reaching Indorf, especially on obvious passing downs. Quick throws, additional blocking help and a productive rushing attack could limit Stony Brook’s opportunities to pressure the quarterback. The Tigers have demonstrated that their passing offense can produce explosive plays, but those opportunities become considerably more difficult when protection breaks down. Keeping Indorf comfortable in the pocket will be essential if Towson hopes to duplicate last week’s offensive performance.

Towson’s Defense Must Find a Way to Get Stops

While Towson’s offense has shown encouraging signs, its defensive inconsistency remains a major concern. The Tigers allowed 41 points against Monmouth despite receiving enough offensive production to win most conference games. Linebacker TJ Sands recorded 17 tackles in that contest, while the defense also received contributions from Seth Chestnut and Myles Johnson. However, individual performances have not consistently translated into the stops Towson needs during critical possessions.

Stony Brook’s rushing attack presents another difficult challenge because Hester has demonstrated an ability to produce touchdowns near the goal line. Towson must improve its tackling, maintain gap discipline and prevent the Seawolves from converting manageable third downs. The Tigers also need to create turnovers, particularly if their offense continues producing points at its recent pace. A few timely defensive stops could make the difference between another frustrating defeat and the team’s first victory.

Series History Favors Towson, but Recent Results Favor Stony Brook

Towson holds a narrow 6-5 advantage in the all-time series, although Stony Brook has won the previous two meetings. The Seawolves defeated the Tigers 27-19 on October 25, 2025, after also earning a convincing 52-24 victory in Towson during the 2024 season. Towson’s most recent victory over Stony Brook came in November 2022, when the Tigers earned a 21-17 road win. Saturday will mark the 12th meeting between the programs, with Towson hoping to protect its historical series advantage.

Three Keys to a Towson Victory

1. Protect Andrew Indorf. Towson must limit Khalid Bueno’s impact and give its quarterback enough time to find Enterline, Charlton and the other receiving options.

2. Contain CJ Hester. Preventing explosive rushing plays and forcing Stony Brook into longer third-down situations will help Towson’s defense.

3. Finish close games. Towson has repeatedly found itself within striking distance of victory. Avoiding penalties, converting scoring opportunities and executing late in the fourth quarter will be essential.

Prediction: Stony Brook 35, Towson 31

Stony Brook enters as the more complete team, with a balanced offense, a productive running game and a defense capable of creating negative plays. Towson, however, has enough offensive talent to make this matchup considerably closer than the teams’ records might suggest. Indorf’s recent performances indicate that the Tigers can move the football against conference competition, especially if their offensive line provides adequate protection. Playing at home during Family Weekend should also give Towson additional motivation to deliver its first victory.

The difference could come down to Stony Brook’s rushing attack and its ability to sustain drives late in the game. Hester presents a difficult matchup for a Towson defense that struggled to stop Monmouth, while Bueno could create problems for Indorf during crucial passing situations. Towson should have opportunities to score and could threaten an upset if it wins the turnover battle. Nevertheless, Stony Brook’s overall balance gives the Seawolves a slight advantage in what could become another frustratingly close defeat for the Tigers.

MSB Take

Towson is much better offensively than its 0-6 record suggests, but there comes a point when competitive losses are no longer good enough. The Tigers have an effective quarterback in Indorf, a dangerous receiver in Enterline and enough offensive weapons to challenge most teams in the CAA. However, the defense must start producing stops when the game is on the line, and the team cannot continue allowing penalties and missed opportunities to decide close contests. Shinnick needs his team to put together four complete quarters rather than another performance that leaves fans wondering what might have been.

Saturday’s matchup represents a significant opportunity for Towson to change the direction of its season before the schedule moves deeper into conference play. Stony Brook is a quality opponent, but the Tigers have already demonstrated they can score against competitive CAA teams. A victory would provide much-needed confidence and give the program something positive to build upon during the second half of the season. Another close defeat, however, would only increase the frustration surrounding a season that has yet to produce a win.
