Washington College women’s volleyball defeated Wilson, 3-0, on Sept. 24 at Penny J. Fall Gymnasium in Chestertown, Maryland. Washington College won by set scores of 25-19, 25-21 and 25-18 to improve to 7-3, while Wilson fell to 0-11.
Lyndsey Wessel recorded 11 kills and hit .588 for Washington College. Izzy Diehl led all players with 12 kills, while Alexis Stubbs posted match-best totals of 17 assists and three aces.
Washington College Controls All Three Sets
Washington College and Wilson were tied at 8-8 in the opening set before the Shorewomen won five of the next six points. An Alexis Stubbs ace gave Washington College a 13-9 lead, and the Shorewomen scored the final five points after Wilson pulled within 20-19. Wessel recorded six kills in the set, including two during the closing run.
Wessel added three early kills as Washington College built an 8-2 advantage in the second set. Wilson cut the deficit to 22-21, but Izzy Diehl and Bethany Haughton began Washington College’s final three-point stretch with a block before Diehl delivered the set-clinching kill. The Shorewomen won the second set, 25-21.
Washington College led 10-9 in the third set before winning six consecutive points to move ahead 16-9. Diehl recorded four kills during that run, and Wilson later trimmed the margin to 19-16. Gianna Folke answered with back-to-back kills during a 6-2 match-closing run, and Diehl ended the match with a kill.
Washington College Women’s Volleyball Statistics
Washington College finished with a .150 hitting percentage, compared with .012 for Wilson. Kaysie Lynch contributed 11 assists, Bethany Haughton recorded three blocks, and Emily Hartnett added nine digs.
The match served as Washington College’s Morgan’s Message Match for mental health awareness. The out-of-conference victory left Washington College at 7-3 overall and 0-0 in Centennial Conference play.
