Hood College women’s soccer fell to Mary Washington, 2-1, on Sept. 23 in Fredericksburg, Va., after the Eagles scored the winning goal in the 88th minute. Haley Gordon tied the match for Hood in the 75th minute, but Mary Washington answered late to secure the victory.
The result moved Hood College women’s soccer to 2-5 on the season, while Mary Washington advanced to 5-1-1. Marlie DeRenzis led the match with eight saves for Hood, including three before halftime.
Haley Gordon Equalizes in the 75th Minute
Mary Washington opened the scoring in the 13th minute. Hood’s defense held off multiple corner-kick and shot opportunities during the 15th and 16th minutes, and DeRenzis stopped three shots before halftime.
Hood continued to remain within one goal after Mary Washington produced a four-shot stretch in the 54th and 55th minutes. Gordon then scored her first goal of the season in the 75th minute to make the score 1-1.
The tie remained until Mary Washington scored in the 88th minute. Hood could not find another equalizer before the final whistle.
Mary Washington Gets Goals From Maria Walsh and Maci Landel
Maria Walsh scored Mary Washington’s first goal, with Maci Landel recording the assist. Landel later scored the winning goal, assisted by Gloria Abiassi.
Landel finished with one goal and one assist, while Walsh recorded one goal. DeRenzis’ eight saves led all players in the match.
Hood College Women’s Soccer Scheduled to Visit Salisbury
Hood is scheduled to play Salisbury University Seagulls on the road in Salisbury, Md., Saturday, Sept. 26, at 1 p.m.
