Johns Hopkins University Athletics men’s soccer defeated visiting Widener 1-0 Wednesday night in Baltimore behind Brendan Listzwan’s goal in the 68th minute. The victory moved Johns Hopkins to 5-2-1 and snapped Widener’s four-game winning streak, dropping the Pride to 4-2-1.
Johns Hopkins held a 16-8 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. John Ghanem made three saves for his third shutout of the season, while Widener goalkeeper Tristan Wiley also made three saves.
Brendan Listzwan Scores in the 68th Minute
Johns Hopkins broke through after Lamine Camara sent the ball into the box from the left side. A Widener defender attempted to clear it over the end line, but it hit the left post and bounced to Listzwan about seven yards from goal.
Listzwan settled the ball and finished into the left side of the goal with Wiley out of position. The goal was Listzwan’s third of the season and proved to be the match’s only score.
John Ghanem Preserves the Shutout
Widener had an opportunity to equalize in the 79th minute when Salvatore Coppola turned just inside the box and put a low shot on goal. Ghanem stopped the attempt, preserving the lead and completing his third save of the game.
Wiley made three saves to keep Widener within one goal, but the Pride could not find an equalizer. Johns Hopkins held on for its 1-0 victory in the Centennial Conference matchup.
Johns Hopkins Men’s Soccer Schedule
Johns Hopkins is scheduled to return to Centennial Conference play against Haverford on Sept. 26 at 1 p.m. at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays will honor longtime assistant coach Winston Earle, who passed away in June, at halftime.
Johns Hopkins is also scheduled to play McDaniel on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m., at Gettysburg on Oct. 3 at noon, at Salisbury on Oct. 7 at 4 p.m., and Washington College on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
