Chestertown, Md. — The Washington College Shoremen defeated the York College of Pennsylvania Spartans, 2-0, in a non-conference men’s soccer game Sept. 22 at Kibler Field at Roy Kirby Jr. Stadium. Oliver Horan scored the first goal of his career, while Calvin Field made nine saves to secure his first career shutout.
Horan gave Washington College a 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute with an assist from Scott O’Donnell. Tshazi Kamau added the second goal in the 78th minute off a pass from Tucker Sprano.
Washington College Takes Lead Before Halftime
Washington College and York College of Pennsylvania exchanged chances early in the match. O’Donnell recorded two shots, including one saved by the Spartans’ goalkeeper in the seventh minute, while Field made several first-half saves.
Horan broke through from the right side in the 43rd minute, scoring with 2:25 remaining before halftime. O’Donnell provided the assist as the Shoremen carried a 1-0 advantage into the break.
Field, Shoremen Protect Shutout
Field made two saves during the opening 10 minutes of the second half to keep York College of Pennsylvania off the scoreboard. Jordan Waiganjo and Kaua de Oliveira also created chances for Washington College after halftime.
Kamau doubled the Shoremen’s lead from the left side in the 78th minute, with Sprano recording the assist. Washington College continued to generate opportunities late, including a Waiganjo shot saved in the 83rd minute and another attempt in the final minute, while Walker Patino missed a late shot just wide.
Field finished with nine saves over the full 90 minutes, marking his first career shutout. Washington College recorded nine shots and did not take a corner kick.
Washington College Moves to 2-2-4
The victory moved Washington College to 2-2-4 on the season, while York College of Pennsylvania entered the game with a 5-2-1 record. The match was a non-conference contest.
The Washington College Shoremen are scheduled to host the Dickinson College Red Devils in a Centennial Conference game Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.
