Félix Bautista Returns as Orioles Make Flurry of Late-Season Roster Moves

The Baltimore Orioles made a significant series of roster moves Saturday, highlighted by the long-awaited return of right-handed reliever Félix Bautista.
Baltimore officially reinstated Bautista from the 60-day injured list ahead of Saturday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Camden Yards. The Orioles also activated outfielder Christian Franklin from the 10-day injured list, while optioning outfielder Heston Kjerstad and left-handed pitcher Cade Povich to Triple-A Norfolk. Outfielder Tyler O’Neill was transferred to the 60-day injured list because of right shoulder inflammation, effectively ending his 2026 season.
The biggest development is unquestionably Bautista.
The Mountain is back
Bautista is back on Baltimore’s active roster for the first time since July 2025, completing another lengthy rehabilitation for a pitcher who has already dealt with multiple major arm injuries.
The 31-year-old underwent surgery in August 2025 to repair a torn labrum and rotator cuff in his right shoulder. His last major league appearance came on July 20, 2025. That shoulder injury came after Bautista had already missed the entire 2024 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Bautista made nine appearances during his latest minor league rehabilitation assignment, eight of them with Triple-A Norfolk. He posted a 2.35 ERA over 7 2/3 innings with the Tides before receiving clearance to return to Baltimore.
Manager Craig Albernaz indicated the Orioles intend to be careful with Bautista rather than immediately forcing him back into his former ninth-inning role. That approach makes sense considering how much baseball Bautista has missed and the severity of the injuries from which he has returned.
Baltimore does not need Bautista to immediately become the pitcher who overwhelmed hitters several years ago. Getting him back onto a major league mound and allowing him to finish the season healthy could be valuable in itself.
Still, his career numbers illustrate just how significant a healthy Bautista could be for Baltimore moving forward.
Bautista owns a 2.01 ERA across 156 career major league appearances with 67 saves and 248 strikeouts in 161 1/3 innings. During his All-Star 2023 season, Bautista went 8-2 with a 1.48 ERA, 33 saves and 110 strikeouts over only 61 innings.
That is the pitcher Baltimore hopes can eventually return to the back end of its bullpen.
Christian Franklin activated
The Orioles also reinstated Franklin from the 10-day injured list after the outfielder dealt with left hand inflammation.
Franklin had been on the injured list since Sept. 1, retroactive to Aug. 31, and recently began a rehabilitation assignment with Norfolk. His return gives Albernaz another option in the outfield for the final portion of the regular season.
To create room, Baltimore optioned Kjerstad to Norfolk.
Kjerstad had been recalled from Triple-A on Sept. 1, but Baltimore has elected to send him back to the Tides as Franklin returns.
It is another notable development for Kjerstad, a former No. 2 overall draft pick who has spent portions of his career moving between Baltimore and Norfolk. The remaining Triple-A schedule can give him additional opportunities for regular at-bats rather than a potentially limited role with the Orioles.
Povich returns to Norfolk after spot start
Povich’s latest stay in Baltimore lasted only one start.
The Orioles recalled the left-hander Friday and gave him the ball against Milwaukee. Baltimore ultimately lost 6-5 in 10 innings, with Povich receiving a no-decision. He was optioned back to Norfolk on Saturday as the corresponding active-roster move for Bautista.
The transaction does not necessarily reflect poorly on Povich’s standing within the organization. Baltimore needed another roster spot for Bautista, and Povich had just completed his assignment after being recalled for the start.
Tyler O’Neill’s season is over
O’Neill’s move to the 60-day injured list carries considerably more long-term significance.
The veteran outfielder has been sidelined since Aug. 23 because of right shoulder inflammation. According to MLB.com, O’Neill’s shoulder did not respond well enough when he attempted baseball activities earlier this month. Moving him to the 60-day IL means he will not return during the remainder of the 2026 season.
O’Neill finishes the season batting .212 with 10 home runs, 23 RBIs, eight doubles and a .677 OPS over 85 games. Injuries have continued to prevent Baltimore from receiving a full season from the outfielder.
O’Neill signed a three-year, $49.5 million contract with Baltimore before the 2025 season. Through his first two seasons with the Orioles, he has appeared in 139 games and hit .206 with 19 home runs, 49 RBIs and a .680 OPS. He is under contract for the 2027 season.
His health will therefore be another important offseason storyline.
Ryan Helsley also shut down
Baltimore’s bullpen received good news with Bautista, but another late-inning reliever will not make it back this season.
President of baseball operations Mike Elias announced Saturday that Ryan Helsley will be shut down for the remainder of 2026. Helsley has been dealing with right elbow discomfort and had begun a rehabilitation assignment with Norfolk, but Baltimore decided against accelerating his return with so little time remaining on the schedule.
Helsley finishes his first season in Baltimore with a 4.11 ERA and eight saves across 17 appearances. He struck out 21 batters over 15 1/3 innings.
The Orioles signed Helsley to a two-year, $28 million contract with Bautista expected to miss most of the season. Injuries, however, limited Helsley’s availability as well.
That makes Bautista’s return particularly interesting. Baltimore can use the final games of the season to evaluate where its former All-Star closer stands without needing to rush him into a heavy workload.
Orioles roster moves — Sept. 19
The Orioles’ official transaction log confirms Saturday’s moves: Bautista and Franklin were activated, Kjerstad and Povich were optioned to Norfolk, and O’Neill was transferred to the 60-day IL.
For Baltimore, the moves represent a mixture of looking at the present and preparing for 2027. Franklin gets another opportunity in the majors, while Kjerstad and Povich return to Norfolk. O’Neill and Helsley can turn their attention toward getting healthy.
Bautista’s situation is different.
After everything he has endured over the past three seasons, simply seeing No. 74 back on a major league mound will represent a major step forward.

The Orioles have had plenty of frustrating injury news over the last several seasons, but Bautista’s return is one of the better developments Baltimore could receive heading into the offseason.
There is no reason to push him. The Orioles should use the remaining games to let Bautista get comfortable facing major league hitters again and, most importantly, finish the season healthy.
A healthy Bautista changes the complexion of this bullpen. His combination of velocity, strikeouts and intimidation made him one of baseball’s most dominant relievers before the injuries piled up. Baltimore cannot assume he will immediately return to that level, but getting him back on the mound now gives the organization a head start on answering one of its biggest bullpen questions entering 2027.
O’Neill’s continued injury problems are much more concerning, while Helsley’s lost season adds another question to the relief corps. But Saturday should primarily be about Bautista.
