Navy Men’s Soccer Grinds Out 2-0 Road Victory Over Longwood

The Navy Midshipmen continued their strong defensive run Tuesday night, earning a gritty 2-0 road victory over the Longwood Lancers at the Longwood Athletics Complex in Farmville, Virginia.

Freshman Jack Illig provided Navy with the eventual game-winning goal in the first half before sophomore Ronan Harding scored his first collegiate goal late in the second half. Goalkeeper Sam Clark delivered another impressive performance with six saves, including a penalty-kick stop in the closing minutes, to preserve the shutout.

The victory improved Navy to 2-2-4 overall and extended the Midshipmen’s unbeaten streak to five consecutive matches. Longwood dropped to 5-2 after beginning the season with five straight victories.

Illig Gives Navy the Early Advantage

Navy entered Tuesday’s match facing a Longwood team that had been one of the nation’s most productive offensive teams during the opening weeks of the season.

The Midshipmen did not allow the Lancers’ early-season success to dictate the match.

Longwood goalkeeper Tor Fletcher stopped an eighth-minute header from Gavin McBride before turning away an attempt from Duncan Sullivan moments later. Clark answered at the other end with consecutive saves in the 16th and 17th minutes as both teams created opportunities early.

Navy finally broke through in the 21st minute.

Will Cawlfield delivered a cross from the wing toward Sullivan, who redirected the ball into the path of Illig. The freshman finished the opportunity to give Navy a 1-0 advantage at 20:27.

Cawlfield and Sullivan were each credited with assists. The goal was Illig’s second of the season and second of his collegiate career.

Illig has quickly made an impact during his freshman season. His first collegiate goal came in Navy’s 2-2 draw against San Diego State on Aug. 23.

Navy’s defense protected the advantage through the remainder of the opening half. Longwood generated several opportunities, but the Midshipmen blocked multiple attempts before they could reach Clark.

The physical nature of the game also began to show. Multiple cautions were issued over the course of the contest as Navy and Longwood battled for possession and space throughout the midfield.

Navy carried its 1-0 advantage into halftime.

Longwood Turns Up the Pressure

Longwood came out aggressively after halftime and spent much of the second half searching for the equalizer.

The Lancers ultimately outshot Navy 11-4 over the final 45 minutes and twice struck the post. Navy’s defense bent under the pressure but never allowed Longwood to get onto the scoreboard.

One of Longwood’s best early opportunities came shortly after halftime when freshman Levon Saribekyan’s attempt hit the left post. Ezrah Serralde later struck the opposite post in the 63rd minute as the Lancers continued applying pressure.

Navy’s defenders repeatedly stepped in front of shots and disrupted Longwood attacks before they developed into clean opportunities.

When shots did reach the net, Clark was there.

Longwood leading scorer Joshwa Campbell had an excellent opportunity around the 70th minute, firing from inside the penalty area. Clark reacted with a diving stop to maintain Navy’s one-goal advantage.

That save became increasingly important as Longwood continued pushing numbers forward.

Harding Makes Immediate Impact

Navy head coach John Hackworth turned to his bench in the 72nd minute, bringing Harding and Denis Pauze into the attack.

The move paid off almost immediately.

Pauze created an opportunity shortly after entering before the two reserves combined for Navy’s insurance goal in the 78th minute.

Following a Navy clearance, Harding controlled a long ball and played it to Pauze. Pauze returned the ball into Harding’s path, allowing him to get behind the Longwood defense and beat Fletcher for a 2-0 advantage at 77:24.

It was Harding’s first collegiate goal in his first regular-season appearance for Navy.

That made the moment particularly significant for the sophomore, who had not previously appeared on Navy’s travel or game-day roster this season. Hackworth praised Harding after the match for taking advantage of his opportunity and pointed toward the competitiveness within Navy’s training sessions as an important part of the team’s development.

Pauze earned his first assist of the season on the play.

Clark Slams the Door

Longwood refused to go away despite falling behind by two goals.

Clark stopped additional attempts from Serralde and Benjamin Ferrero during the final 10 minutes, but his biggest save came in the closing moments.

A Navy foul inside the penalty area gave Longwood a penalty kick in the 89th minute. Campbell stepped to the spot with an opportunity to spoil Navy’s shutout.

Clark guessed correctly.

The sophomore goalkeeper dove to his right and stopped Campbell’s penalty before recovering the rebound, securing Navy’s 2-0 victory and his fourth clean sheet of the season.

Clark finished with six saves.

His four shutouts are already the most by a Navy goalkeeper since Pierce Holbrook recorded five during the 2023 season.

Clark’s emergence has become one of the biggest developments of Navy’s young season. He moved into the starting role following Dylan Carmody’s injury earlier in the year and entered the Longwood match with some of the Patriot League’s strongest goalkeeping numbers.

Navy’s Defense Continues to Deliver

The shutout continued a remarkable defensive turnaround following Navy’s difficult opening match.

The Midshipmen surrendered seven goals against UC San Diego on Aug. 20. Since then, Navy has allowed only five goals over its next seven matches and has recorded four shutouts.

Navy’s recent results demonstrate that improvement.

After beating Presbyterian 3-0 on Aug. 31, the Midshipmen played consecutive scoreless draws against Temple and Mount St. Mary’s. Navy then earned a 1-1 draw at Holy Cross before shutting out Longwood.

The Longwood performance may have been one of the most impressive of that stretch.

Longwood entered the week with one of Division I’s highest-scoring attacks. Before facing Navy, the Lancers were averaging 3.50 goals per game, while Brando Bedolla and Campbell had emerged among the nation’s most productive offensive players.

Navy held the Lancers scoreless.

Longwood generated chances and hit the woodwork twice, but Navy’s combination of defensive blocks and Clark’s goalkeeping prevented the Lancers from converting their pressure into goals.

Midshipmen Extend Unbeaten Streak

Navy has now gone five consecutive matches without a defeat.

The Midshipmen are 2-0-3 during that stretch after beginning the season 0-2-1.

Navy has also gone unbeaten in five straight road matches following its season-opening loss at UC San Diego, earning draws at San Diego State, Mount St. Mary’s and Holy Cross before Tuesday’s victory at Longwood.

Tuesday’s win also improved Navy to 8-6-1 in the all-time series against Longwood.

Cawlfield’s assist on Illig’s goal was his third of the season, moving him into a tie with Nick Gallucci for the team lead. Sullivan also picked up an assist after scoring Navy’s goal in Saturday’s 1-1 Patriot League draw against Holy Cross.

Navy Returns Home for Patriot League Match

The Midshipmen now turn their attention back toward Patriot League competition.

Navy returns to Annapolis Saturday, Sept. 19, to host Boston University at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The game represents Navy’s first home Patriot League match of the season after opening conference play with the 1-1 draw at Holy Cross.

Navy enters the matchup 2-2-4 overall and 0-0-1 in Patriot League play.

Navy’s record does not completely show how much this team has improved since the beginning of the season.

The Midshipmen’s defense has become their identity. Navy has posted four shutouts and has now gone five straight matches without a loss, while Clark continues to provide outstanding goalkeeping behind an increasingly confident defensive unit.

Tuesday’s victory was particularly encouraging because Navy did not need to dominate possession or overwhelm Longwood offensively. The Lancers created plenty of pressure in the second half, hit the post twice and earned a late penalty kick, but Navy found ways to survive every challenge.

Illig continues to show promise as a freshman, while Harding scoring in his first regular-season appearance demonstrates the depth Hackworth can potentially use moving forward.

Most importantly, Navy went on the road against a Longwood team that started the season 5-0 and walked away with a convincing result.

Now the challenge is carrying that momentum into Patriot League play. Saturday’s home game against Boston University gives the Midshipmen an opportunity to turn their five-game unbeaten streak into progress in the conference standings.
