St. Mary’s (Md.) defeated Washington College (Md.) women’s volleyball, 3-2, on September 17 at Penny J. Fall Gymnasium in Chestertown, Md. The Seahawks won 16-25, 26-24, 25-22, 20-25, 15-13, improving to 5-4 while Washington College fell to 4-3.
Izzy Diehl led Washington College with a career-high 26 kills. Alexis Stubbs recorded a personal-high 31 assists and four aces, while Lyndsey Wessel added a career-high six blocks.
Washington College Takes First and Fourth Sets
Washington College trailed 16-13 in the opening set before scoring nine of the final 12 points to win 25-16. Diehl and Wessel each recorded two kills during the closing run, and Diehl finished the set with seven kills.
St. Mary’s (Md.) won the second set, 26-24, after scoring the final three points to even the match. Diehl recorded five kills in the set, while Emily Hartnett served two aces.
The Seahawks opened the third set with a 16-8 lead, but Washington College rallied to tie the score at 21-21 on a Bethany Haughton block. St. Mary’s (Md.) then took four of the next five points to win 25-22, with Diehl recording eight kills in the set.
Washington College used an 11-0 run to take a 19-8 lead in the fourth set. Grace Salveron recorded four aces during the run, and Emma Shaner finished the set with a kill after St. Mary’s (Md.) cut the deficit to 24-20. The Shorewomen secured the set 25-20 to force a deciding set.
St. Mary’s (Md.) Wins Deciding Set
Washington College took a 5-2 lead in the fifth set, but St. Mary’s (Md.) responded with a 6-1 run to move ahead 8-6. The Shorewomen trailed 14-11 before staving off two match points, but the Seahawks ended the match with a kill for a 15-13 victory.
Washington College hit .221 and finished with 15 aces and eight blocks. Kaysie Lynch recorded 15 assists and three aces, Salveron had four aces, Haughton added four blocks, and Hartnett contributed 10 digs and three aces.

Washington College won the opening and fourth sets, but St. Mary’s (Md.) claimed the other three sets to secure the five-set victory. Diehl’s 26 kills highlighted the Shorewomen’s individual performance, while Stubbs and Wessel also set personal or career highs.
Washington College will host Rutgers-Camden at 11 a.m. and Christendom at 3 p.m. on September 19 in a tri-match. Rutgers-Camden and Christendom will play at 1 p.m.
