Rogers, Dutko lead Maryland women’s cross country to fifth at Spiked Shoe Invitational
Maryland women’s cross country continued its strong start to the 2026 season Friday morning with a fifth-place team finish at the Spiked Shoe Invitational in State College, Pennsylvania.
Eva Rogers led the Terrapins with an 18th-place finish on Penn State’s 6K course, crossing the line in 21 minutes, 25.7 seconds. Katie Dutko followed in 26th place with a time of 21:48.0 as Maryland placed four runners inside the top 30 and all five scorers inside the top 35.
The meet gave Maryland a much tougher early-season test after the Terrapins won the Delaware Invitational one week earlier. The Spiked Shoe field included several of the better programs from the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions, with Syracuse winning the meet with 32 points and host Penn State finishing second with 36. Pittsburgh took third with 90 points and Monmouth finished fourth with 95 before Maryland rounded out the top five with 124.
Rogers once again showed why she is becoming one of Maryland’s most dependable runners. Her 21:25.7 performance was a career best on Penn State’s course and improved her time there by approximately three seconds from her sophomore season. She had finished second overall at Maryland’s season-opening Delaware Invitational with a 5K time of 18:09.5.
Dutko continued her strong opening stretch as well. The sophomore from Rockville, Maryland, placed 26th and was Maryland’s second finisher for the second consecutive meet. Dutko had taken third at Delaware in 18:34.7, helping the Terrapins sweep the first three individual spots in the opener.
Rose Coats was not far behind Friday, crossing the finish line in 28th place with a time of 21:50.1. Coats entered the season as one of Maryland’s most accomplished runners after making back-to-back NCAA Championship appearances and earning First Team All-Big Ten recognition last season. She also opened 2026 by winning the Delaware Invitational in 17:31.0.
Freshman Kate Konyar continued an impressive beginning to her college career by finishing 29th in 21:53.8. Konyar had made her collegiate debut a week earlier at Delaware and immediately placed seventh overall, giving Maryland another promising scoring option behind its more experienced runners.
Maren Iski completed Maryland’s scoring five with a 34th-place finish in 22:01.4. That gave the Terrapins a relatively tight scoring spread, with Maryland’s first five runners separated by only 35.7 seconds. That kind of depth could become increasingly important later in the season when the Terps begin competing against larger and deeper championship fields.
Maryland’s fifth-place team finish came in a nine-team field and followed an excellent opening performance at Delaware, where the Terrapins finished first among 11 teams and running clubs. Maryland scored just 22 points in that meet after Coats, Rogers and Dutko took the first three places and Konyar and Iski also finished inside the top 10.
The Spiked Shoe Invitational represented a significant increase in competition. Syracuse entered ranked fourth in the Northeast Region, while Penn State was ranked second in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Maryland held its own against that quality field and finished comfortably ahead of Bucknell, Saint Joseph’s, American and Buffalo.
The result also gave Maryland an early indication of how its depth may hold up as the season progresses. Rogers, Dutko, Coats and Konyar all finished within 30 places, while Iski stayed close enough to make Maryland’s fifth scoring position competitive. The Terps did not need one dominant individual performance to stay near the front of the team standings.
Maryland will now have several weeks before returning to competition. The Terrapins are scheduled to run next at the Paul Short Invitational on Oct. 2 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with the women’s race scheduled to begin at 10:15 a.m.
That meet should provide another important measuring stick. Coats set a Maryland program record in the 6K at last year’s Paul Short Invitational, running 19:45.4 and finishing fourth in a field of 335 runners. Maryland will then compete at the Panorama Farms Invitational on Oct. 16 before turning its attention to the Big Ten Championships on Oct. 30 in Madison, Wisconsin.

A fifth-place finish may not jump off the page after Maryland won its season opener, but this was arguably a more useful early-season result for the Terrapins. Maryland stepped into a deeper field with multiple strong regional programs and still put four runners in the top 30 and all five scorers in the top 35.
Rogers deserves particular attention. She continues to give Maryland another front-line runner alongside Coats, while Dutko has been extremely steady through the first two meets. Konyar also looks like she could become an important part of this lineup very quickly after two strong performances to begin her freshman season.
The biggest positive is Maryland’s depth. Having five scorers finish within roughly 36 seconds of one another gives the Terrapins a strong foundation heading into the larger meets later this fall. If Coats, Rogers and Dutko continue running near the front while Konyar and Iski keep developing, Maryland has a lineup capable of becoming increasingly dangerous as championship season approaches.
