UMBC Men’s Soccer Earns First Shutout of Season in Scoreless Draw at Lehigh
UMBC men’s soccer bounced back defensively Saturday night, earning its first clean sheet of the 2026 season in a 0-0 draw against Lehigh at the Ulrich Sports Complex in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The Retrievers moved to 2-1-1 overall, while the Mountain Hawks went to 0-2-2 after a tightly contested nonconference battle that featured only four total shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Joe Pollard made one save to record his first shutout as a Retriever, while Lehigh goalkeeper Anton Kinnunen stopped all three UMBC shots on target.
The result was an important response for UMBC after a difficult 3-0 loss to George Washington in its previous match. The Retrievers had opened the season with wins over Loyola Maryland and Presbyterian before suffering their first defeat, making Saturday’s road test at Lehigh an opportunity to reestablish their defensive structure. UMBC did exactly that, limiting the Mountain Hawks to seven total shots and only one attempt on target.
Neither team created much danger in the opening 45 minutes. Lehigh held a narrow 3-2 advantage in shots during the first half, but UMBC produced the only attempt on goal before halftime. Junior forward Gunder Miller forced Kinnunen into a save in the 23rd minute, and the play led to a Retriever corner kick, but UMBC could not convert the ensuing opportunity.
The match opened up slightly after halftime, and UMBC became the more aggressive attacking team. The Retrievers outshot Lehigh 7-4 in the second half and created two more shots on goal within a three-minute stretch. Abdul Kamara tested Kinnunen in the 65th minute before captain Adamo Pantaleo put another effort on target in the 67th, but the Lehigh keeper denied both chances to preserve the scoreless tie.
Lehigh produced its best chance almost immediately afterward. Shea Coughlin placed the Mountain Hawks’ only shot on target in the 68th minute, but Pollard made the save to keep UMBC level. Pollard was not asked to make another stop the rest of the way, with the Retriever defense preventing Lehigh from putting any of its remaining attempts on frame.
The defensive work represented a significant improvement from UMBC’s previous outing. George Washington scored three second-half goals against the Retrievers on Aug. 31, but UMBC responded six days later by allowing only one shot on goal over 90 minutes. The performance also came despite a lineup that had been dealing with injuries and constant changes early in the season, with UMBC having used a different starting 11 in each of its first three matches.
UMBC still entered Saturday with plenty of offensive potential. Six different Retrievers had combined for eight goals through the first three matches, with Kamara leading the team with three after scoring twice in a 5-1 win over Presbyterian. Kamara had also been named America East Offensive Player of the Week following that performance, making his second-half chance against Lehigh one of the more dangerous moments of the match.
The draw also continued a positive run for UMBC in the series. Saturday marked the fifth meeting between the programs since 2005, and the Retrievers extended their unbeaten streak against Lehigh to three consecutive matches. While UMBC could not generate the goal needed to leave Bethlehem with a victory, getting a result on the road while posting a clean sheet was still a productive outcome.
Lehigh also had reason to be pleased with its defensive performance. Kinnunen finished with three saves and recorded the fifth shutout of his career, while the Mountain Hawks’ back line limited UMBC to nine total shots. Lehigh head coach Dean Koski said afterward that his team looked more organized defensively and played better in the second half as it continued trying to find consistency early in the season.
The Retrievers now turn their attention to another challenging road match. UMBC travels to Norfolk, Virginia, to face Old Dominion on Friday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. before returning home for three consecutive nonconference matches against Howard, William & Mary and Navy. America East play begins Sept. 26 when UMass Lowell visits Retriever Soccer Park.

This was not the most exciting match offensively, but it was exactly the type of performance UMBC needed after allowing three goals against George Washington. The Retrievers went on the road, held Lehigh to one shot on target and walked away with their first shutout of the season. That kind of defensive response matters, especially for a team still working through injuries and lineup changes early in September.
The next step is turning that defensive stability into more complete performances. UMBC created enough chances to make Kinnunen work three times and controlled more of the second half, but the Retrievers could not find the finishing touch. With players such as Kamara, Miller and Pantaleo capable of creating opportunities, the offense should have enough quality to produce when the defensive foundation is this strong.
A 2-1-1 start is still a solid position for UMBC, particularly with three home matches coming after the trip to Old Dominion. The clean sheet should give Pollard and the back line confidence, and if the Retrievers can combine that defensive effort with the attacking form they showed earlier against Loyola and Presbyterian, UMBC should be in good shape heading toward America East play.
