Navy Volleyball Falls to Penn in Four Sets After Pivotal Third-Set Battle

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Navy Midshipmen came within one point of taking control of Saturday’s match, but Penn survived a marathon third set and defeated Navy, 25-21, 23-25, 29-27, 25-21, at Wesley A. Brown Field House. The loss dropped Navy to 1-4, while Penn improved to 2-1 during the Kristen Dickmann Invitational. The opening set remained even through ties at 15 and 17 before Penn created separation with three consecutive points. Navy continued to apply pressure and pulled within two at 20-18, 21-19 and 23-21. The Midshipmen could not complete the comeback, however, as the Quakers scored the final two points for a 25-21 win. Both teams recorded 14 kills in the frame, but Penn’s four blocks and two service aces helped decide the set.
Navy responded by building a 12-7 advantage in the second set, but Penn gradually erased the deficit and moved ahead 20-19. The Midshipmen regained their composure after falling behind 22-21, using a sideout to tie the score before an Isa Boyd service ace put Navy in front. A Penn attack error gave the Mids set point at 24-22, and after the Quakers saved the first opportunity, Boyd connected with Hailey Jacobus for the set-winning kill. Navy’s 25-23 victory evened the match at one set apiece.
The third set became the unquestioned turning point of the afternoon, producing 15 ties and six lead changes. Farrah Eike delivered a kill that gave Navy a 24-23 lead and an opportunity to take a two-sets-to-one advantage. Penn saved that set point and eventually earned three opportunities of its own, but Eike answered one with another kill while two Penn service errors kept Navy alive. With the score tied at 27, the Quakers finally registered consecutive kills to escape with a 29-27 win and take control of the match.
Navy continued to battle in the fourth set, which included 10 ties and seven lead changes. Neither side could establish momentum until Penn broke a 17-17 tie by scoring three straight points. The Midshipmen twice reduced the deficit to two, but consecutive Penn kills extended the Quakers’ advantage to 23-19. That late surge provided enough separation for Penn to close out the set, 25-21, and secure the match.
The overall numbers showed how narrow the difference was between the teams. Penn finished with only one more kill than Navy, 61-60, while both teams totaled 77 points. The Quakers committed seven fewer attack errors and hit .279, compared with Navy’s .199 percentage, while also holding advantages in digs, 73-62, and blocks, 10-8. Navy held a 9-6 edge in service aces, but Penn hit .333 while limiting the Mids to .111 in the decisive fourth set. (Official box score)
Eike led Navy’s offense with 18 kills while adding 12 digs, two blocks and one ace. After recording four kills and four attack errors in the opening set, Eike rebounded with 14 kills and only three errors over the final three frames. Caroline Buffum, Ellen Gundlach and Grace Burgoyne each contributed 10 kills, giving the Midshipmen four players in double figures. Burgoyne also led Navy with four blocks.
Amara Chambers delivered a strong all-around performance with a match-high 24 digs and 11 assists. Boyd paced Navy with 25 assists while adding eight digs and three aces, and Caroline Adams supplied four aces and nine assists. The balanced production allowed Navy to remain competitive throughout the match, but the Midshipmen could not consistently slow Penn’s attack during the biggest points.
Zada Sanger led the Quakers with 14 kills, while Adell Murray recorded 13 kills, seven blocks and a .524 hitting percentage. Ellie Siskin added 10 kills, and Addison Pollock anchored Penn’s defense with 21 digs. This was a frustrating loss for Navy because the Midshipmen were one point away from taking a 2-1 lead. Navy showed encouraging offensive balance, produced nine service aces and fought through extended rallies against a deep Penn lineup. The difference came down to execution, as Penn committed fewer attack errors and delivered the final two kills of the third set when the match was hanging in the balance. If Navy can clean up those errors and become more efficient late in sets, the Midshipmen have enough offensive options to turn competitive performances like this one into victories.
