Morgan State Volleyball Earns First Win of 2026 With 3-1 Victory Over Saint Peter’s
Morgan State volleyball earned its first victory of the 2026 season Friday night, defeating Saint Peter’s in four sets in its home opener at Hill Field House in Baltimore. The Lady Bears won 25-23, 11-25, 25-21 and 25-17 to improve to 1-3 on the season. Morgan State also snapped a six-match losing streak dating back to last season while avenging a 3-1 loss to Saint Peter’s in 2025.
The victory was an important response for a Morgan State team that opened the season with three losses at the Steel Classic hosted by Lehigh. Morgan State entered its home opener searching for some early-season momentum after losses to Cleveland State, Gardner-Webb and Lehigh. Returning to Hill Field House provided the Lady Bears with an opportunity to reset, and they took advantage by producing their best overall performance of the young season.
Morgan State Takes a Tight Opening Set
Morgan State established its offense immediately and delivered its most efficient attacking set of the match in the opener. The Lady Bears recorded 17 kills and hit .355, but Saint Peter’s stayed close throughout the set. Morgan State ultimately held off the Peacocks for a 25-23 victory and a 1-0 advantage in the match.
Saint Peter’s answered emphatically in the second set and temporarily changed the direction of the match. The Peacocks recorded 12 kills while hitting .381, while Morgan State managed only six kills and hit .042. Saint Peter’s cruised to a 25-11 victory, evening the match at one set apiece and forcing Morgan State to regroup during the break.
Lady Bears Respond in Third Set
Morgan State’s response in the third set was one of the most encouraging aspects of the victory. Rather than allowing the second-set struggles to carry over, the Lady Bears regained their offensive rhythm and came from behind to win the set 25-21. Morgan State totaled 13 kills and hit .286 in the set, giving the Lady Bears a 2-1 match advantage.
Saint Peter’s actually recorded 15 kills in the third set, two more than Morgan State, but the Peacocks hit just .186. Morgan State’s defense and presence at the net began making a significant difference as the match progressed. That defensive pressure helped the Lady Bears regain control after Saint Peter’s had dominated the previous set.
Morgan State carried that momentum directly into the fourth set and never allowed Saint Peter’s to force a decisive fifth. The Lady Bears held the Peacocks to a negative hitting percentage in the final set and closed the match with a convincing 25-17 victory. It was an impressive finish for a Morgan State team looking for its first win and showed the type of response head coach Xiomara Ortiz will want to see throughout the season.
Williams Leads Morgan State Offense
Senior Jada Williams led the Morgan State attack with a match-high 13 kills while contributing in nearly every phase of the match. Williams also recorded eight digs and four blocks, including a solo block, giving Morgan State an experienced presence both offensively and defensively. Her performance came after she reached 300 career blocks during Morgan State’s season-opening tournament at Lehigh.
Michaela Panekova continued her productive start to the season by finishing with 12 kills. Panekova entered the weekend after earning Steel Classic All-Tournament Team honors, where she accumulated a team-high 22 kills along with nine digs and five blocks over Morgan State’s first three matches. Her production alongside Williams gave Morgan State two dependable attacking options against Saint Peter’s.
Aubrey Wilson provided another efficient offensive option, recording seven kills while hitting .455. Tyrah Weems added six kills and two blocks, giving Morgan State additional production beyond Williams and Panekova. That balance helped the Lady Bears finish with 46 kills on 117 attacks and a .231 team hitting percentage.
Brown Controls Morgan State Offense
Setter Isabelle Brown played a major role in Morgan State’s offensive success and delivered one of the most efficient performances of the match. Brown recorded 31 assists while also contributing five kills on only seven attempts for a match-high .714 hitting percentage. She added two service aces and a solo block, making her impact extend well beyond simply setting Morgan State’s attackers.
Brown entered the season as an important piece of Morgan State’s offense after earning MEAC All-Rookie honors in 2025. She recorded 595 assists last season, ranking third in the conference, while averaging 7.26 assists per set. Brown also produced three double-doubles during her freshman campaign, and her performance against Saint Peter’s provided another example of her ability to influence a match in several areas.
Morgan State Dominates at the Net
The biggest statistical advantage of the match came at the net, where Morgan State completely controlled the blocking battle. The Lady Bears finished with a 9-0 advantage in team blocks, preventing Saint Peter’s from recording a single block during the four-set match. Tre’Niya Miller led Morgan State with five blocks, including two solo stops, while also adding three kills.
Williams added four blocks and Weems contributed two as Morgan State consistently disrupted Saint Peter’s attack. The Lady Bears’ defensive pressure became particularly important during the final two sets, when the Peacocks struggled to maintain the offensive efficiency they displayed in the second. Morgan State ultimately held Saint Peter’s to a negative hitting percentage in the fourth set to help put the match away.
Blocking has been a strength of Morgan State’s program in recent seasons, making Friday’s performance especially encouraging. The Lady Bears out-blocked 20 of their 29 opponents last season and previously led the MEAC with 260.5 blocks during the 2024 campaign. Williams has been a major part of that success and entered the home weekend already having reached the 300-career-block milestone.
Lady Bears Show Early-Season Progress
Morgan State finished the match with 46 kills, 35 assists and seven service aces while hitting .231 as a team. More importantly, the Lady Bears showed an ability to recover after playing their poorest set of the night. Saint Peter’s appeared to have seized momentum following its 25-11 second-set victory, but Morgan State responded by winning consecutive sets to close the match.
The victory also continued Morgan State’s recent success against Saint Peter’s. Morgan State entered the match holding a 4-3 advantage in the all-time series despite losing 3-1 to the Peacocks last season in Jersey City. Friday’s victory gave the Lady Bears some revenge while providing their first win of a season in which they were picked fourth in the MEAC preseason poll.
Morgan State exceeded expectations within the conference last season after being picked sixth and eventually finishing third in the MEAC, the program’s best conference finish since 2019. That improvement gives the Lady Bears something to build upon entering Ortiz’s latest season leading the program. A balanced performance like the one against Saint Peter’s shows Morgan State has several different ways to win when its offense, setting and blocking are working together.

Morgan State needed a performance like this after opening the season 0-3, but the way the Lady Bears earned the victory may be more important than simply getting into the win column. Saint Peter’s dominated the second set, and Morgan State could easily have allowed the match to slip away after losing 25-11. Instead, the Lady Bears responded with two strong sets and controlled the match when it mattered most.
The balance should be particularly encouraging for Morgan State. Williams and Panekova supplied the offense, Brown ran the attack effectively and Miller helped Morgan State dominate the net. When multiple players are contributing like that, Morgan State becomes much more difficult for an opponent to defend.
There is still a long way to go in the 2026 season, and one victory does not erase the struggles of opening weekend. However, Morgan State was picked fourth in the MEAC after finishing third a season ago, and there is enough returning experience on this roster to make the Lady Bears an interesting team once conference play begins. Friday’s win was a positive first step toward finding the consistency Morgan State will need to contend in the MEAC.
