Washington College women’s volleyball defeated visiting Albright, 3-1, on Sept. 3 at Penny J. Fall Gymnasium in Chestertown, Maryland. The Shorewomen won 25-19, 22-25, 25-13 and 25-16 in their home debut to improve to 2-0, while Albright fell to 0-2.
Izzy Diehl led Washington College with a career-best 21 kills, including eight in the fourth set. She recorded the match-clinching kill as the Shorewomen completed the four-set non-conference victory.
Washington College Takes Control After Split
Washington College used a 12-5 run in the opening set to build a 20-13 lead. Gianna Folke capped the 25-19 victory with a kill.
Albright responded in the second set after trailing 16-15. The Lions used a 4-0 run to take a 19-16 lead, and Washington College pulled within 21-20 before Albright finished with a 25-22 win.
Washington College opened the third set with a 10-2 advantage on a Diehl kill. The Shorewomen secured the set, 25-13, after an Albright hitting error.
Washington College totaled 15 kills and five aces in the fourth set. Emily Hartnett recorded three of those aces, while Emma Shaner’s kill helped the Shorewomen take a 21-11 lead during a 10-1 run. Diehl then closed out the match with her 21st kill in a 25-16 set win.
Balanced Effort Supports Four-Set Win
Lyndsey Wessel added 12 kills and six blocks, while Folke also finished with 12 kills. Alexis Stubbs recorded 29 assists and four aces, and Kaysie Lynch contributed 27 assists.
On defense, Lucy Jones led with 20 digs, and Grace Salveron added 10 digs. Washington College hit .266 and finished the match with 11 aces and seven blocks.
Washington College Travels to Hazleton
Washington College will travel to Hazleton, Pennsylvania, on Sept. 6 for a non-conference tri-match. The Shorewomen are scheduled to play Kent State at Tuscarawas at 1 p.m. and Penn State Hazleton at 3 p.m.
