Vance Honeycutt’s 10th-inning RBI single gave the Chesapeake Baysox a 5-4 walk-off victory over the Portland Sea Dogs on Sept. 2 at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie. The win marked Chesapeake’s fifth walk-off victory of the season and completed a comeback from a 3-0 deficit.
Wehiwa Aloy Fuels Chesapeake’s Comeback
Wehiwa Aloy hit two-run home runs in the seventh and eighth innings to help the Chesapeake Baysox erase Portland’s lead. His first homer followed Ethan Anderson reaching on an error and cut the deficit to 3-2, while his second scored Anderson and tied the game at 4-4.
Aloy’s second home run was his eighth Double-A homer of the season and his second multi-home run game with Chesapeake at the Double-A level. Both home runs came off Portland left-handed reliever Tyler Davis, who was charged with a blown save.
Honeycutt Delivers in the 10th
After both teams went in order in the ninth, Chesapeake right-handed reliever Brock Moore pitched a scoreless 10th inning to earn the win. Moore faced the minimum across the ninth and 10th innings.
Griff O’Ferrall entered as Chesapeake’s automatic runner (pinch-runner) in the 10th inning and stole third base. Honeycutt then grounded a single through the left side against Portland right-handed pitcher Erik Rivera, bringing O’Ferrall home and ending the game.
Pitching Keeps Chesapeake in the Game
Chesapeake left-handed starter Joseph Dzierwa struck out seven batters over four innings and allowed three runs on six hits and one walk. Portland left-handed starter Hayden Mullins received a no-decision after allowing one hit and one walk while striking out 10 over six scoreless innings.
Bradley Brehmer followed Dzierwa with two scoreless innings and two strikeouts in his first Double-A appearance in nearly two years due to injury. Ryan Long then struck out all three batters he faced in the top of the seventh inning.
Max Ferguson went 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Portland Sea Dogs, including a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Johanfran Garcia added a solo home run in the eighth inning.
Baysox Continue Final Homestand
The Chesapeake Baysox are the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, while the Portland Sea Dogs are the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. Chesapeake’s overall record is 52-64, with a league record of 33-25.
The Portland Sea Dogs are scheduled to return Thursday night for a 6:35 p.m. game at Prince George’s Stadium. Chesapeake right-handed pitcher Anthony Eyanson is scheduled to start against his former team, with Portland left-handed pitcher Devin Futrell set to start for the Sea Dogs.
