The Frederick Keys defeated the Wilmington Blue Rocks 4-1 Tuesday night at Daniel S. Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, Delaware, taking the series opener behind a three-run fifth inning and a pitching effort that held Wilmington to four hits.
Frederick scored three additional runs after taking an early 1-0 lead, while Cohen Achen finished the victory by retiring all three batters he faced in the ninth inning for his first save of the season. The win gave the Keys the first game of a seven-game week.
Frederick Keys Build Lead in Fifth Inning
Boston Bateman opened the game with a strikeout and worked a scoreless bottom of the first inning for Frederick. In the second inning, RJ Austin gave the Keys a 1-0 lead with an RBI groundout that scored Edwin Amparo from third base.
Zac Lampton made his first appearance since returning to the Keys in the bottom of the fourth inning. He pitched a scoreless frame, allowing Frederick to carry its one-run lead into the fifth.
The Keys added three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Enddy Azocar delivered a two-RBI single, and Ethan Anderson followed with an RBI double to put Frederick ahead 4-0.
Wilmington Blue Rocks Cut Deficit
Both teams went scoreless in the sixth inning before Jacob Walsh put Wilmington on the board with a solo home run in the seventh. The homer cut Frederick’s lead to 4-1, but the Blue Rocks did not score again.
Achen pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning before returning for the ninth. He retired all three batters he faced to record his first save of the season and secure the Keys’ 4-1 win.
Doubleheader Scheduled for Wednesday
The Frederick Keys and Wilmington Blue Rocks are scheduled to play a doubleheader Wednesday at Daniel S. Frawley Stadium. The first game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., with the second game scheduled to start roughly 45 minutes after the first.
The second game will serve as a makeup for the contest postponed Aug. 2 in Frederick.
