The Delmarva Shorebirds lost 10-3 to the Salem RidgeYaks on Wednesday night in Salisbury, Maryland. Salem scored five runs in the sixth inning and added four more in the seventh to defeat the Shorebirds.
Delmarva entered the game with a 38-72 overall record and a 15-29 mark in their league. Salem came in at 48-60 overall and 23-20.
Delmarva Shorebirds take brief lead
The RidgeYaks scored first in the third inning when a wild pitch by KK Clark allowed Adonys Guzman to score, giving Salem a 1-0 lead. The Shorebirds responded in the fifth inning with a two-run triple by Stiven Martinez to take a 2-1 lead. Elvin Garcia followed with an RBI single, extending the lead to 3-1.
Salem RidgeYaks pull away
The RidgeYaks responded with five runs on four hits in the sixth inning, taking a 6-3 lead. They added to the margin in the seventh inning with an RBI single by Kleyver Salazar and a three-run homer by Andrews Opata, his ninth of the season, to push the score to 10-3.
The Shorebirds were unable to mount a rally against Salem’s bullpen, and Salem secured the 10-3 victory.
Pitching decisions and next game
Reliever Nicholas Judice earned the win for Salem and improved to 1-0. Dalton Neuschwander took the loss for Delmarva, dropping to 1-11. Ethan Walker closed out the final 10 outs for Salem to earn his first save.
Delmarva is scheduled to try to regain the series lead Wednesday at 7:05 p.m., with Holden deJong making his home debut. Williams Montero is set to start for Salem.
