The Delmarva Shorebirds fell 9-5 to the Fredericksburg Nationals on Saturday night, August 8, 2026, in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The Nationals improved to 66-40 overall and 20-20 in league play, while Delmarva dropped to 37-70 overall and 14-27 in league play.

Fredericksburg Takes Early Control With Back-to-Back Runs

The Nationals scored two runs in the second inning on consecutive hits by Jordan Williams and Manuel Cabrera, each driving in a run. Christhian Vaquero then led off the third inning with a solo home run, extending Fredericksburg’s lead to 3-0.

The Nationals extended their lead in the fifth inning when Hunter Hines hit a two-run homer, putting Delmarva behind 5-0. Williams added another two-run home run in the sixth inning, pushing the Nationals’ advantage to 7-0.

Delmarva Mounts Late Rally, Comes Up Short

Delmarva scored its first runs in the seventh inning on an RBI groundout by DJ Layton, followed by a run-scoring single by Stiven Martinez, trimming the deficit to five runs at 7-2. The Nationals immediately answered as Rafael Ramirez Jr. hit a two-run home run with two outs in the seventh, restoring the seven-run lead at 9-2.

Elvin Garcia hit a solo home run in the eighth inning, marking Delmarva’s first home run of the night and making the score 9-3. Martinez added two more runs with a single in the ninth inning, making it a 9-5 game. Despite the Shorebirds’ late surge, they could not overcome the deficit.

Pitching Decisions and Series Finale

Luke Johnson earned the win in relief for Fredericksburg, improving to 6-2 on the season. Delmarva starting pitcher Harrison Kreiling took the loss in his organizational debut, falling to 0-1.

The series concludes Sunday afternoon, with Esteban Mejia scheduled to pitch for Delmarva against Fredericksburg’s RJ Sales. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.

MSB Analysis

Fredericksburg’s four home runs created a large deficit the Shorebirds could not overcome. Although Delmarva scored five runs across the final three innings, the Nationals’ seven-run lead after the sixth inning proved too large.
