The Chesapeake Baysox lost 2-1 to the Harrisburg Senators on Aug. 4 at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie, Maryland, despite six strong innings from left-handed starter Caden Hunter. Hunter allowed six hits and two runs, one earned, while recording 10 strikeouts in his second consecutive quality start to begin his Double-A career.
Chesapeake entered the game with an 18-15 record in the current split and a 47-54 overall record. The loss came in a pitchers’ duel during the Eastern League matchup.
Caden Hunter Records 10 Strikeouts in Home Debut
Hunter, the reigning Eastern League Pitcher of the Week, made his home debut for the Chesapeake Baysox. He held Harrisburg to two runs over six innings and fell to 1-1 after receiving the loss.
The Senators took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Kervin Pichardo hit a solo home run on the first pitch he saw. Chesapeake answered in the fourth after Thomas Sosa doubled and Wehiwa Aloy followed with a single.
Sosa scored when back-to-back Harrisburg throwing errors allowed the tying run to cross the plate. The run was charged to Harrisburg starter Isaac Lyon, who pitched six and two-thirds innings and allowed five hits, one run and two walks while recording two strikeouts.
Harrisburg Scores Go-Ahead Run in the Seventh
Hunter opened the seventh inning by allowing a pair of singles before Jeisson Cabrera entered in relief. Johnathon Thomas then grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Sam Brown from third on a throwing error, giving the Senators a 2-1 lead.
Cabrera was not charged with a run during his inning, even though the fielder’s choice went to Hunter’s line. Tyson Neighbors and Ryan Long followed with scoreless eighth and ninth innings to keep Chesapeake within one run.
Harrisburg reliever Sandy Gaston retired the Baysox in order in the ninth inning. With two outs, Frederick Bencosme hit a deep fly ball to right-center field, but Harrisburg caught it for the final out.
Chesapeake Baysox Set for Wednesday Doubleheader
Wehiwa Aloy and Victor Figueroa also made their home debuts for Chesapeake. The Baysox will continue the six-game series by hosting a doubleheader against the Harrisburg Senators on Wednesday at Prince George’s Stadium.
Sebastian Gongora is scheduled to start the first game for Chesapeake against Harrisburg left-hander Alex Clemmey. Gongora is listed at 8-6 with a 3.95 ERA, while Clemmey is listed at 3-5 with a 3.99 ERA.
Christian Herberholz is scheduled to start the second game for the Baysox against Harrisburg right-hander Blake Brown. Herberholz is listed at 1-2 with a 6.04 ERA, while Brown is listed at 0-0 with a 3.18 ERA. First pitch for the opening game is scheduled for 5:35 p.m.
