Poseidon Caps Outstanding Summer With Third-Place Finish at Governor’s Cup Race
The Navy offshore sailing team closed out another successful summer campaign with a podium finish as Poseidon earned third place in its division and third overall at the 53rd Governor’s Cup Race on the Chesapeake Bay. Skippered by senior Nico Martinez, the Midshipmen competed against 20 other boats in one of the region’s premier offshore sailing events, hosted by St. Mary’s College of Maryland.
The Governor’s Cup Race is one of the Chesapeake Bay’s signature overnight distance races, testing crews through changing winds, navigation challenges, and endurance over an extended course. Navy once again demonstrated why it remains one of the nation’s premier collegiate offshore sailing programs by finishing among the event’s top competitors.
Martinez and the crew aboard Poseidon put together a consistent race from start to finish, securing a podium result to conclude an impressive summer schedule. The performance continues the senior skipper’s strong season, which included a runner-up finish at the prestigious Around Long Island Race just one week earlier.
The Governor’s Cup result adds another highlight to a productive 2026 campaign for Navy Offshore Sailing. Earlier this year, the Midshipmen posted a fifth-place finish at the Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup before Invincible, skippered by Lauren Aaby, captured third in class at the Newport-to-Bermuda Race. Those performances, combined with Poseidon’s summer success, underscore the depth and consistency of the program.
Head coach Ken Luczynski, who took over the program prior to the 2025 season, has quickly helped maintain Navy’s tradition of excellence in collegiate offshore sailing. Under his leadership, the Midshipmen have continued to contend for top finishes in some of the most challenging offshore races in the country.
With the summer racing season now complete, the Midshipmen will turn their attention toward the fall collegiate schedule, looking to carry the momentum from another successful series of offshore events into championship competition.

Navy Offshore Sailing continues to prove it is one of the Naval Academy’s most consistently successful programs. A third-place finish in the Governor’s Cup against a strong fleet is another example of the leadership, seamanship, and teamwork that define the Midshipmen. With experienced skippers returning and momentum building, Navy should once again be a contender throughout the 2026-27 collegiate sailing season.
